A Modular Course on Genomics and Gene Expression Analysis for Biologists (September 2 - 30, 2008)

Background:
The genome projects have triggered global changes in the research strategies and promised enhanced discovery rates in various life science subjects. The combination of genomic studies, related bioinformatics and the high throughput microarray technology has positively influenced the rate of data capture in the area of gene expression in the context of normal and abnormal physiological states, which in turn are influencing many aspects of today’s research including diagnostics, prognostics and therapeutics.

But the fundamental concepts and advanced understandings of genomics, transcriptomics and the related technologies have often eluded students as well as many of the professionals. IBAB presents a comprehensive review on these topics in the form of a highly flexible (elective/optional sessions) 2 week workshop. The program particularly addresses the biotech-bioinfo interfaces. The theory topics include genome projects, genomic elements, promoter prediction, primer/probe designing, the microarray technology, and principles and use of related techniques. The hands-on sessions cover in silico (databases, softwares and data analysis) and in vitro (DNA and RNA isolation and analysis, labeling cDNA, PCR, RT-PCR, hybridizing and scanning the microarrays and protein handling experiments) aspects.

Participants:
This course is intended for those working in areas of cell and molecular biology or related life science areas, in academia and industry, and wish to either obtain a comprehensive overview of basic aspects of genomics today (or bridge gaps in his/her understanding in this area). Intake is restricted to 10.

Prerequisites: B.Tech. or M.Sc in Life science/related subjects (e.g., biotechnology, agriculture, zoology, botany, bioinformatics, pharmacology).

Course Outline:
The course covers
a) theory of fundamentals of genomics and gene expression analysis, as well as the principles of technologies involved;
b) hands on (mainly demonstrations, with limited performance) practical sessions on some of the important techniques (including reverse transcription PCR, microarray, western, ELISA and 2-D electrophoresis) involved in genomics and gene expression studies.
The lecture and the practical sessions will be spread over two weeks (between 9.30 AM to 6 PM):
Part I: Genomics: 2nd Sept., 2008 to 9th Sept., 2008
Part II: Gene Expression Analysis: 15th Sept., 2008 to 22nd Sept., 2008
Part III: Protein level studies of gene expression (practical sessions): 23rd Sept., 2008 to 30th Sept., 2008

Specific lectures and/or hands-on practical sessions can be selected for participation depending on participant’s interests.

Participation certificates may be given for individual modules for those who qualify in tests.

The current module will be equivalent to 1.5 credits.
This module forms part of a series of modules (offered as part of the Centre of Excellence scheme under the DIT, Govt. India) and the credits can eventually be used to add up (over a maximum period of 3 years) to a certificate course or diploma in Bioinformatics.

Fees:

Depends on the type of participants, varies between Rs 3,500-17,500

Please note:

1. The fees do NOT include accommodation, travel and food expenses. All these expenses will have to be separately borne by the participants.
2. There is no last date for applications. Once the 10 seats are full, we will close the admissions, and this will be displayed on IBAB's web-site.
3. DD must be sent along with CV for enrolling.
4. ITPB (inside which IBAB is situated) is a huge complex and about 1.5 to 2 hours distance from the main city. Please refer to the maps in the city for directions.
5. The selected candidate should bring a photo identity card (passport, voter id, PAN card, driver's license) along with printed copy of the email from IBAB confirming his/her selection for the program.
