Biotechnology and Society: Conference organized by Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology 5-7th November.

The 18th Swadeshi Science Congress is being organized jointly by Swadeshi Science Movement and Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, in association with various R&D organisations from 5 to 7 November 2008 at Thiruvananthapuram. In order to encourage our scientists and research scholars to propagate and publish their scientific findings, Swadeshi Science Movement has been organizing the Swadeshi Science Congress since 1991 every year, coinciding with the birthday of Sir. C. V. Raman on 7 November.

Swadeshi Science Congress is a platform to bring scientists, technocrats, research scholars professional students and enthusiastic science communicators and common public together to present, discuss and disseminate the scientific knowledge. It is a congregation for exchanging their views, ideas and to work for the development of society through the intervention of Science, Engineering and Technology. The Congress encourages presentations in regional languages as well as to explore the traditional knowledges and indigenous technologies.

The focal theme of the Science Congress is Biotechnology and Society. Biotechnology, the emerging field in the present context is going to be discussed in detail and its wide applications will be an eye opening for the masses. Biotechnology, broadly defined as "using organisms or their products for commercial purposes” have got a wide range of practical uses that can have dramatic effects on our lives. Apart from the traditional uses, recent developments like genetic engineering have given biotechnology new dimensions and increased its significance. It will surely influence the world economy and the whole society making desirable or undesirable impacts. Hence it is of utmost significance to have detailed discussions in relevant platforms. Apart from this, papers from different areas of pure and applied sciences will be presented during the three day congress.

An eminent Scientist will deliver Sir. C. V. Raman Memorial Lecture on 7th November 2008.

Outstanding papers presented by scientists below 35 years of age will be considered for Young Scientist Award. Participants contesting for the young scientist award should send their application in the prescribed form along with the manuscript and proof of age as on 30/10/2008.

Eminent Malayali Scientists and Technologists who have unique contributions in the field of science and technology will be honored with Swadeshi Sasthra Puraskaram. Dr. P. R. Pisharody (Astro Physicist), Dr. K. N. Pai (Medical Surgeon), Thaikkattussery E.T.Neelakantan Moosath, Shri.Laurie Backer, Dr.K.Madhavan Kutty (Calicut), Dr.P.K.Warrier (Kottakkal), Dr. M. Sambasivan (Neurosurgeon), Dr. G. Madhavan Nair (ISRO), Dr. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Dr. C. K. Ramachandran (Physician, Calicut) Dr. Placid Rodriguez (Kalpakkam), Dr. A. N. P. Ummer Kutty (Calicut University) Dr. P. Pushpangadhan (National Botanic Research Institute), Prof. K. S. Manilal (Calicut) were some of the recipients of this Puraskaram.

The women scientist whose presentation and content is unique will be awarded best women scientist award.
