DBT BIRAC Innovators Awards 2012

Agriculture Sector

Best Innovation in the Agriculture Sector was awarded to Bioseed Research India Pvt. Ltd. Hyderabad & International Centre for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology New Delhi.

In recognition of their significant contribution to innovative research towards the development of Rice hybrids with improved characteristics. The collaborative research has focused on development of tolerance to abiotic stress, a major impediment to enhancing crop productivity. Several new genes have been tested in situ and proof of concept for significant and positive role of three genes with complementary roles in drought and salinity tolerance pathways has been successfully demonstrated in rice.  As a follow-up research, marker free stacks of these genes are being developed and the technology is being advanced to develop drought tolerant rice cultivars.

Healthcare Sector

Best Innovation in the Healthcare Sector was awarded to Strand Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd. Bangalore

In recognition of their significant contribution to innovative research towards the development of Hepatotoxicity Prediction Platform (Heptox). Heptox is a unique integrated in vitro - in silico predictive platform that facilitates the design of better drugs with fewer side-effects. It predicts mechanisms by which drug candidates can hurt the liver and offers insights into how these problems could be overcome. A drug is tested in specific cellular assays and the results used to predict via simulation, its effect in animals and humans. Heptox enables the selection of drug candidates best optimized for human use and empowers drug development that is effective and ethical by minimizing animal use.

Biomedical Devices, Implants & Diagnostics Sector

Best Innovation in the Biomedical Devices, Implants and Diagnostics Sector was awarded to Perfint Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. Chennai.

In recognition of their significant contribution to innovative research towards the development of CT guided robotic positioning system (ROBIO EX) & automated device for planning, execution and confirmation of targeted tumor ablation therapy (MAXIO). ROBIO EX is a CT guided robotic positioning system that assists with fast and accurate tool placement for interventional procedures such as biopsy, FNAC, pain care, drainage and tumor ablation. Commercially cleared by regulatory bodies of several countries, ROBIO EX has been currently installed in top hospitals globally and around 150 procedures have been performed. Perfint’s newest product MAXIO, is set to change the world of Interventional Oncology. MAXIO will allow clinicians to visually plan, execute, and validate ablation procedures on a single system, and all in 3D. With certifications and clearances from various Global authorities MAXIO is targeted for sale across the globe with a strong backup from leading clinicians.

Industrial Processes and Green Technology Sector
