IIT Gandhi Nagar PhD Admissions 2013 in Life Sciences

IIT Gandhinagar is looking for bright and dedicated young scholars interested in research to join us as Ph.D. scholars. Currently, we offer Ph.D. programme in several disciplines in Engineering (Biological, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical and Materials Science and Engineering), Sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) and Humanities & Social Sciences (Cognitive Science, English, Philosophy, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, South Asian Studies and Social Epidemiology). Prospective students satisfying the eligibility criteria are encouraged to acquaint themselves with the research areas of our faculty members for suitable match of interest. IIT Gandhinagar also offers a Start Early Ph.D. Fellowship with additional financial support for exceptionally qualified undergraduate students wishing to start on a direct Ph.D. programme.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria
At least 55% marks or 5.5 CPI marks in M.A./M.Sc./B.Tech./M.Tech.or equivalent degree in appropriate branches. Above mentioned eligibility criteria is minimum and the disciplines may use higher cut off levels for short listing.Candidates belonging to SC/ST categories would be eligible for relaxations, as per norms, in the selection criteria. For discipline wise minimum eligibility criteria, please click here.

Course Work Requirement
IIT Gandhinagar strongly believes in value addition through course work. There is a significant number of course work a Ph.D. student needs to do depending on his/her background.

Residential Requirement
Ph.D. programme is fully residential. The regular candidates will have to stay on campus. For external candidate the minimum residential requirement is normally one year. For candidates under Faculty Development Program, currently 2 years of residency requirement after completion of 1 year of advanced admission is followed.

Admission Categories
Regular(RR): Fulltime residential research candidate.

External (ET): Candidates serving in research institutions/industry. External candidates may furnish their employers consent (see Annexure 1) at the time of interview. The candidates under this category may require an additional supervision at their parent institutions.

Faculty Development Program (FDP): Candidates working as a faculty in any educational institution. In this category the candidate is given advance admission with 90 days of residency requirement in 1st year and on successful completion of 1st year, 2 years of residency to complete the program. A certificate in support of the candidature must support the application (see Annexure 2).

The Institute may club together the External and Faculty Development Programs to a Continuing Doctoral Programme, with one year of residency requirement in the first phase and at least two weeks of residency in the Institute per semester. The program may also provide an opportunity for advance admission with a preparatory period of one year.

Financial Support
Students joining the Ph.D. program as regulars (RR) will be considered for Institute Fellowship based on the following norms:

Students with B.E./ B.Tech. / B.Arch / B.Sc.(Engg)/ M.Sc. / M.A. / M.Com. degrees or equivalent, who have qualified GATE or National Level test (UGC / CSIR / NBHM / DBT etc.), will be considered for monthly assistantship of Rs.16000/- for the first 2 years and enhanced rate of Rs.18000/- for the remaining 3 years.

Students with M.Tech. / M.E. / M.Arch. / M.Sc.(Engg) or equivalent/ M.Phil./ M.B.B.S / MD / MS degrees and Management students with a combination of M.B.A. and Engineering/ Technical background will be considered for monthly assistantships of Rs. 18000/- for the first 2 years and enhanced rate of Rs.20000/- for the remaining 3 years.

Full time PhD students are encouraged to present their research work at international conferences. Financial support of up to Rs. 2.00 Lakhs for the entire duration of the programme is available. Additional funding may also be provided.

Over and above the monthly assistantship, an additional fellowship of Rs. 5,000/- per month is provided to the candidates ranking within the top 5% in any relevant National level qualifying examination. Candidates who have obtained at least one of their previous degrees from a premier institution like IIT, IISc etc. can be considered for an additional fellowship of Rs. 10,000/- per month.

Candidates joining for the Ph.D. program through start early Ph.D. fellowship will receive an additional fellowship of Rs. 10,000/- per month in case GATE qualified. Payment of assistantship is subjected to a candidate complying with the prescribed norms and work output.
