About the Host University & the Department

Annamalai University, one of the largest unitary, teaching, and residential Universities in Southern Asia, was established in 1929. Annamalai University, accredited with ‘A’ Grade by NAAC in 2014, is one of India’s largest public residential universities with 10 Faculties and 49 departments of study. The University has initiated several innovative teaching programmes over the years and has been a pioneer in distance education. Annamalai University has a commendable track record in projects and publications and has been awarded the PURSE Programme by the Department of Science and Technology. Nineteen departments are supported by UGC-SAP, Sixteen by DST-FIST and two departments have attained the status of Centre of Advanced Study. The University has been rated Seventeenth in the country among the Top 100 institutions of Higher Education and second in the State by SCImago Institutional Ratings. Annamalai University has joint research and innovation partnerships with 24 institutions across the USA, Europe, Australia, Japan, and the UK. Annamalainagar is already a busy and full-fledged University town, east of Chidambaram, the abode of Lord Nataraja.

Since its inception in 1994, the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology has continuously strived for excellence in both teaching and research. The Department is dedicated to providing a strong foundation in biochemistry, molecular biology, and biotechnology with an emphasis on interdisciplinary approach. The Department has a dynamic and vibrant research focus that is reflected by publications, awards, wide spectrum of collaborations, scopus rating, and generous funding from national and international agencies. The Department has been recognized by the Department of Science and Technology for funding under the DST-FIST programme and by the UGC under the SAP-DRS programme.

About the conference
Drug discovery is the process through which potential new medicines are identified. In the past, most drugs have been discovered either by identifying the active ingredient from traditional remedies or by serendipitous discovery. Modern drug discovery involves the identification of lead candidates, synthesis, characterization, screening, and assays for therapeutic efficacy. Discovering drugs involves a complex interaction between investors, industry, academia, patent laws and regulatory boards. Indeed, drug development is a lengthy, complex, and expensive process, entrenched with high degree of uncertainty that a drug will actually succeed. The unknown pathophysiology of newly emerging diseases and identification of novel molecular targets due to postgenomic developments for existing health problems makes the drug discovery landscape more challenging. Patient heterogeneity, drug resistance, complex biochemical interactions, and underlying regulatory rules makes the drug discovery process even more complex.
The National Conference on "Drug Discovery & Therapy (DDT-2016)" will be a platform for the discussion and presentation of new advances in the fields of drug discovery, biotherapeutics, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, bioinformatics and drug trials. The conference will address the critical challenges and emerging paradigms in drug discovery, high-throughput drug screening, drug designing, molecular targets, drug resistance and drug delivery systems. The focus of the conference will be on the interdisciplinary approaches related to drug discovery and therapy which includes:
v  Novel therapeutic strategies
v  High-throughput screening
v  Therapeutic targets
v  Biochemical pharmacology
v  Drug delivery and nanomedicine
v  Natural products and biopharmaceuticals
v  Combinatorial chemistry
v  ADME/Tox
v  Drug designing and molecular modelling
v  Clinical trials & translational medicine
The organizing committee is confident that participants will benefit from the high value scientific program. We welcome all the researchers to join us for this interdisciplinary event for stimulating discussions and knowledge sharing.
