Admission to the THSTI-JNU PhD program in biomedical and clinical research 

For candidates with medical, life sciences (including biomedical, health, pharmaceutical, nutritional science, public health, and nursing), veterinary science, engineering, or mathematics background 

Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) is a part of the inter-disciplinary Biotech Science Cluster at Faridabad in the National Capital Region. THSTI is designed to be a dynamic and interactive organization with a mission to conduct innovative translational research across disciplines and professions to accelerate the development of concepts into tangible products to improve human health. THSTI is a recognized R&D institute of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi to offer doctoral programs in biomedical and clinical research tracks. 

Applications are invited for the THSTI-JNU PhD programs under two tracks, 

(i) biomedical research (ii) clinical research. The broad domains of ongoing research are: 

 biology of infectious diseases such as dengue, Japanese encephalitis, hepatitis E and tuberculosis, vaccine and anti-viral development 
 physiology of nutrition and the developing immune system, immune responses in pregnancy and childhood 
 clinical research and epidemiology focused on maternal and child health 
 auto-immune diseases, infection and inflammation 
 understanding disease through the human microbiome 
 In vitro diagnostics 
 Therapeutics 
 Platform technologies: Phage display, Recombinant protein production platforms. 
 medical devices and implants 
 mathematical modelling to understand biological problems 
 biology of metabolic syndrome and disease progression dynamics

Eligibility: Candidate must have Master’s degree in any branch of life science (including biomedical, health, pharmaceutical, nutritional science, public health, or nursing), veterinary science, engineering, mathematics or a medical degree (MBBS, BDS, or equivalent) from a recognized university with at least 55% marks. Except for candidates with medical or allied background (MBBS, BDS, or equivalent) and those with Master’s degree in public health, nutrition, and nursing, all others must have qualified the junior/senior research fellowship examination of CSIR, UGC, ICMR, NBHM, DBT (category I only) or must have their own fellowship from any government funding agency for the duration of their PhD program. 

Candidates with medical or allied background (MBBS, BDS, or equivalent) or those with Master’s degree in public health, nutrition, and nursing, without a research fellowship will be required to appear in an objective type THSTI fellowship eligibility test to be conducted at THSTI in Faridabad on 25th May 2017. 

Candidates with a doctoral degree in medicine (MD) will be shortlisted directly for the interviews. 

Candidates appearing in the finals of their qualifying examination may also apply. However, they will be required to fulfil the necessary academic/ fellowship requirements at the time of joining the institute. 

SC/ST/PWD (with a minimum of 40% disability) candidates who have qualified a junior research fellowship examination and passed and/or appearing in the qualifying examination are eligible to apply for admission irrespective of their percentage of marks. Similarly, SC/ST/PWD (with minimum 40% disability) candidates with medical or allied background having passed or appearing in the qualifying examination are allowed to take the THSTI fellowship eligibility test irrespective of their percentage of marks. 

Selection procedure: Applicants fulfilling the above essential criteria and those shortlisted based on their marks in the THSTI fellowship eligibility test conducted by THSTI will be interviewed from 1st June 2017 onwards. The final selection will be made based on applicant’s performance in the interview and the list of selected candidates will be published on THSTI website by 9 PM on 6 th June 2017. Selected candidates should interact with potential PhD supervisors and provide their choice of supervisors by 4 PM on 12th June 2017. Final allotment of supervisors shall be made based on choices exercised by both the students and the supervisors. 

Fellowship: Students recommended for admission to the PhD program and holding fellowship from any of the above agencies will be required to utilize their own fellowship. Candidates selected through the THSTI fellowship eligibility test and candidates with a MD degree will be awarded THSTI fellowship as per the Govt. of India rules as applicable in this regard. 

No. of seats: A total of 30 candidates shall be selected, if found suitable. The number of selected candidates may increase or decrease as per the actual requirement at the time of selection. 

Reservations: 27% seats for OBC (non-creamy layer), 15% of seats for SC, 7.5% of seats for ST, and 3% of seats for differently-abled (with minimum of 40% disability) are reserved for candidates belonging to these categories. SC/ST/OBC candidates are required to submit certificate in respect of their claims from the authorized officers as notified by the Government for the purpose from time to time. The PWD (with minimum 40% disability) candidates are required to submit a certificate from authorized Medical Doctors/Hospitals indicating the extent of physical disability. Candidates belonging to OBC/SC/ST/PWD (with minimum 40% disability) category who are selected on their own merit with General Category candidates shall not be counted under reserved quota.

Academic program: Selected students will undergo pre-PhD course work for 2 semesters starting on 1 st July 2017. Those having successfully completed the pre-PhD course requirement will be recommended by the academic committee to JNU for registration and allowed to continue research towards their PhD thesis. For the award of the doctoral degree candidate will have to complete all requirements as per the JNU rules. 

Fees: Admission fees, annual fees, registration fees or any other fees levied by JNU shall be payable by the student. 

Hostel: Depending on the availability selected students will have the option of shared hostel accommodation in lieu of their HRA. 

Application procedure: Candidates fulfilling the above requirements may apply online. Please take a print out of the application, sign it and send it to the Administrative Officer (Academics) of the institute at the above address along with the application fee and self-attested copies of documents in support of qualification so as to reach latest by 28th April 2017. Candidates in government employment are required to send their application through proper channel or produce NOC at the time of interview. 

Applications received after the closing date will not be entertained on any ground including postal delay. Incomplete applications in any respect will be summarily rejected and no correspondence in this regard will be entertained. 

Application fee: Non-refundable application fee of Rs. 500 for General and OBC candidates, and Rs. 250 for SC/ST/PWD candidates should be paid by bank draft in favor of Translational Health Science and Technology Institute payable at Gurgaon. Names of candidates shortlisted for the THSTI fellowship eligibility test and interview shall be displayed on THSTI website by 9 PM on 10th May 2017. Applicants are advised to visit THSTI website for all updates regarding the PhD admissions and no separate intimation may be sent.
