National Seminar on Proteomics: Advances, Applications and Challenges (PRAAC)
19-20 February 2010
Organised by
Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB)
Bangalore
About IBAB
The Institute of Bioinformatics & Applied Biotechnology (IBAB) was established in 2001 as a joint venture of the Department of IT & BT, Government of Karnataka and the ICICI Bank. The institute’s activities are uniquely guided by a governing body and scientific advisory committee comprising distinguished visionaries from academia, industry and Government. The institute has built its reputation and has gained visibility within the country as well as internationally as an institution well known for the excellent education in the interdisciplinary science of bioinformatics and has won appreciation both from industry and academia. Recently, IBAB has been recognized as a “Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics Training and Research” by the Department of Information Technology, Government of India. The institute is also acknowledged as a “Center of Excellence in Entrepreneurship Education” by the Wadhwani Foundation and the National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN).
The faculty scientists at IBAB are actively engaged in conducting research in the area of bioinformatics and relating to biotech companies, patents and entrepreneurship. The institute has attracted research grants from DST, DBT, DIT, and also from industry for the support of its academic programs. The research conducted at IBAB has been published in prominent international journals and is well cited.
One of the important missions of IBAB is to train a class of professionals that are proficient in the complementary areas of Biology and Information Technology. The institute, since its inception, has played a very important role in seeding skilled human resources for companies in the area of life sciences and Bio-IT through its excellent and constantly evolving training programs.
Seminar
Proteomics, the science of simultaneous identification and quantitative measurement of the levels of thousands of diverse proteins in a biological specimen, has proved to be an extremely exciting field for researchers and clinicians. The field of proteomics is accelerated with the advent of effective new methodologies for rapid and accurate identification of proteins and their posttranslational modifications from highly complex samples. These technologies would certainly enhance our mechanistic understanding of biological processes. Additionally, the proteome analysis approach has facilitated the discovery of new biomarkers and therapeutic targets for the diagnosis and treatment of complex disorders. The field of proteomics is expected to have an increasingly powerful impact on our understanding of the physiological and pathological processes underlying health and disease.
Objectives
Considering the significant contributions that the field of proteomics could bring to address fundamental biological questions in general and health related issues in particular, the goal of the present seminar is to highlight the recent advances, applications and the challenges that persist. Leading researchers actively involved in the contemporary field of proteome research will be addressing these issues in their lectures. These talks would be of immense benefit to students, researchers, teachers, and the uninitiated as well as professionals from life science-related companies. The seminar also provides a forum for networking, exchange of ideas and discussion to address proteomics related challenges.
Organising Committee
A small group has been formed by taking scientists from different organisations to assist in the organization of the scientific program and other activities relating to the seminar.
Dr. D.Chatterji (IISc, Bangalore); Dr. K.Dharmalingam (MKU, Madurai); Dr.D.Pal (IISc,Bangalore); Dr. R. Sirdeshmukh (CCMB, Hyderabad); Dr.U.Tatu (IISc,Bangalore); Dr. N.Yathindra (IBAB, Bangalore).
Program Highlights
Prof P. Balaram, an internationally renowned scientist for his outstanding contributions in the field of Molecular Biophysics, will deliver the Keynote address for the conference. Prof Balaram is currently the Director of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and has been serving as the editor of “Current Science” since 1995. Additionally, a range of invited lectures from eminent professionals, experts and leaders in proteomics research has been arranged.
