MSc Biotechnology (Integrated) Course - 2010-2011

Introduction

As per the budgetary provision and instruction of the Government of Kerala, the Kerala Agricultural University has decided to start the M. Sc. Biotechnology (Integrated) course, with the objective of improving the quality of biotechnology education in the state. The course will be conducted in multi-institutional mode, involving institutions engaged in biotechnology teaching / research, to facilitate the utilization of highly competent manpower and facilities. A core facility as well as core faculty will be established at the College of Agriculture, Vellayani, Thiruvananthapuram, where the course will be conducted.

Eligibility

The minimum eligibility for admission to the course shall be a pass in 10+2 examinations in science stream or equivalent with 60%marks in aggregate for general category and 50% marks for SC/ST candidates.

Reservation of seats

Reservation of seats shall be governed by the rules of the Kerala State Government.

Duration of the programmes

The minimum prescribed duration shall be 10 semesters (five academic years) excluding the period of temporary discontinuance, if any.

General notes

1. System of teaching and evaluation

Semester system of instruction in multi-institutional mode and internal / external evaluation will be followed. Emphasis will be given for hands on training in various subjects making the students acceptable by the probable employers.

2. How to apply

Application forms and prospectus are available in the KAU official website (http://www.kau.edu) in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. The downloaded application should be printed on A4 size paper and used. The filled in application forms may be submitted along with application fee as detailed below to the Registrar, Kerala Agricultural University, KAU P.O., Thrissur, Kerala - 680 656 so as to reach on or before the date and time indicated in the notification.

3. Application fee:

General category : Rs. 750
Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe : Rs. 375

The application fee should be enclosed as Demand Draft drawn in favour of the Comptroller, Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikkara payable at Thrissur. No other mode of payment will be accepted under any circumstances. A passport size photograph of the candidate bearing his/her signature should be affixed on the application and admit card in the appropriate place.

4. Enclosures

Each application for admission should be accompanied with the following:

a) Demand Draft for the application fee as prescribed.
b) Community Certificate obtained from a Revenue Officer not below the rank of Village Officer in the case of SC/ST candidates.
c) Attested copies of certificates in proof of age, qualifications, mark list of qualifying examination etc.
d) One self-addressed stamped envelope (worth Rs. 10/-) of size 23 cm x 10 cm.

Note: Documents sent with the application are not returnable.

5. Last date and time for receipt of filled in application forms :

The filled in Application Form along with the Application Fee and other relevant documents, has to reach the Registrar, Kerala Agricultural University, KAU P.O., Thrissur 680 656, before 3.00 p.m. on 30.06.2010 (Wednesday), by Hand Delivery/Registered Post /Speed Post.

6. Penalty for false information

Any candidate who is found to have willfully or otherwise given any particulars which are false or has suppressed material information or does not satisfy the requisite qualification for admission shall be disqualified. They shall not be allowed to continue on the rolls of the University, if it is detected at any stage of his/her studentship in the University. In case the candidate has already passed out of the University, then the degree awarded by the University will be withdrawn.

7. Rejection of application and disqualification of candidates

Applications received late or defective or incomplete in any manner or which do not contain any of the enclosures specified above are liable to be summarily rejected.

Applicants who attempt to canvas or influence the members of the Selection Committee directly or otherwise will be disqualified.

8. Selection

The selection of candidates will be based on an entrance exam conducted by the Kerala Agricultural University. The questions will be objective type and based on the syllabus for the Kerala Entrance Examination 2010 of the Commissioner for Entrance Examination, Kerala.

The Entrance Examinations will be held in Thrissur, Kerala on the dates mentioned below as per Indian Standard Time (IST).

Allotment will be based on the preference by the candidate & rank in the common entrance exam.

General Knowledge

Paper I, consists of Chemistry and Physics with 60 questions each. Paper II, consists of either Mathematics or Biology with 60 questions, and General Knowledge with 20 questions. Paper I, with a duration of 120 minutes, will have 120 questions carrying a total of 120 marks. Paper II, with a duration of 80 minutes will have 80 questions carrying a total of 80 marks. The total marks for the entrance examination will be 200 (120+80). Those who fail to secure at least 40 marks (20 %) will not be ranked.

9. Announcement of results
A list of candidates selected for admission and the dates on which they have to remit the fees and join the course will be published at the University headquarters, Vellanikkara and through the KAU Website.

10. Admission
Candidates selected will be admitted to the course, provided they pay the prescribed fees in full on the due dates fixed.

Course fee: Rs. 30,000 per semester for M.Sc. Biotechnology (Integrated) and Rs. 50,000 and M.Sc. Climate Change Adaptation (Integrated) Course. In the case of those candidates selected for admission who have not paid the fees in time and not joined the course on the date fixed, their claims for admission will be cancelled without notice and the seat thus becoming vacant will be filled up with eligible candidates, if any, in the rank/wait list.

Candidates should produce the original certificates in proof of age, qualifications, TC, Conduct certificate, medical fitness certificate obtained from any Medical Officer not below the rank of Civil Surgeon at the time of admission at the time of admission.

11. Residential facilities
Limited hostel facilities are available . This will be provided to the students, depending on availability.

12. Exemption from payment of fees
Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates may be given exemption from payment of fees subject to the grant of concession by the Scheduled Caste Development Department, Govt. of Kerala. However, they will have to pay various caution deposits. They should also submit applications for concession in the prescribed form.

No exemption from payment of fees will be granted to candidates who are likely to be eligible for any other type of fee concession. But the fees paid by them will be reimbursed if and when the concessions are sanctioned.
