QIP SHORT-TERM COURSE ON TOOLS FOR BIORESOURCES CONSERVATION

July 11 - 15, 2011

Organized by

Indian Institute Technology Guwahati Department of Biotechnology
Indian Institute Technology Guwahati
Guwahati-781039, ASSAM
BACKGROUND

The unique richness of bioresources in Northeast (NE) India makes it a potential hub of economic growth of the country to a competent level if utilized and tapped efficiently. To derive appropriate returns in a sustainable manner, rich bioresources of the region require proper protection and utilization. One may maximize the returns by appropriately harnessing the power of tools available ‘off the shelf’.
The QIP on “Tools in Bioresources Conservation” is designed to offer an in-depth theoretical knowledge and hands on exposure to “Off the shelf” tools such as molecular markers and bioassays that provide direct value in key areas of conservation both ex situ and in situ. This course is further intended to sensitize and to strengthen the conservation and use of plant genetic resources with special emphasis on bioresources of NE region.

COURSE CONTENT*

Outlines of the broad topics that will be covered during the course are as follows:

Importance of Bioresources and their conservation
Bioresources protection tools
Ex situ and in situ conservation methods
Molecular markers - DNA Typing; DNA Barcoding;
Microsatellite Markers etc,
Bioassays
GI and Bioresource
*Laboratory classes on some selected topics will be held regularly.
