ABOUT The WORKSHOP The workshop on “Advanced Techniques in Life Sciences (ATILS)” aims to extend its technical knowledge to the young researchers and students in the field of life science by giving them hands on training to participants. NIT Rourkela is one of the premier nation level institutions for technical education in the country and is funded by the Government of India. The department is actively engaged in teaching and research. Our department is newly established and came into existence in 2008 and the academic curriculum was fully functional in 2009. However, it is not new in terms of experience and cultivating science. The department is well equipped with all the advanced and necessary instruments required to conduct high level research. Our faculties have the expertise in different fields like Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Cell biology, Immunology, Foodscience, Microbiology and Molecular biology. With the previous success of organizing international conference in our department in year 2010 (InCoFIBS), we are happy to announce this two day workshop, (ATILS).

Modules

  • Day 1: Morning Lecture Sessions
  • Day 1: Afternoon Practical Sessions

  • Module I: Microbial Diversity Study

  • Experiment I:

16s rRNA approach for exploring microbial diversity (Bacterial lysate preparation, PCR, Agarose gel electrophoresis, Gel Documentation system, Phylogenetic tree analysis).

    Module II: Bioprocess Technology

    Experiment I:

Fermentation process for the production of bioethanol/ Enzymes (using Fermenter).

  • Day 2: Morning Practical Session

Module III: Nanobiotechnology and Molecular Medicine

    Experiment I:

Preparation of biodegradable polymeric nano/micro particles by double solvent evaporation method (encapsulation with target protein/other antigens).

    Experiment II:

ELISA (Enzyme linked Immuno Sorbent Assay) for estimating specific protein analytes (antigen/antibody) in the solution.

    Module IV: Molecular Biology

    Experiment I:

RT-PCR - Expression profile of gene in human cancer by RT-PCR.

  • Day 2: Afternoon Practical Session

    Module V: Biophysics

    Experiment I:

Temperature mediated protein unfolding in presence of nano particles (spectrophotometrically).

Module VI: Cell & Developmental Biology

    Experiment I:

Cell Culture Techniques – Gene transfection and observation by fluroscence.

  • Who Can Apply Research scholars, graduates and post graduate students working in the areas of Life Science can apply. Mostly early career PhD/research students will be preferred as the seats are limited.

Venue The workshop will be held on 07-08, March 2013 at Department of Life Science, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, Odisha. Rourkela is one of the well-developed steel townships on Howrah –Mumbai main line (via Nagpur) of South Eastern Railway. It is well connected by railway network to the rest of India. The NIT Campus is about 8 km from Rourkela Railway station.
