Denmark PhD Scholarship in Marine Bacterial Biotechnology

3 years starting at January or early 2009.

National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua)
Section for Aquatic Microbiology and Seafood Hygiene
Technical University of Denmark

The PhD project will focus on the influence of environmental parameters on the production of bioactive compounds (pigments, extracellular polymers, antibiotic active substances) from marine bacteria identified as species belonging to Pseudoalteromonas, Ruegeria and Vibrio. Also, the project will evaluate potential use of such compounds as inhibitory substances against pathogenic bacteria or as agents preventing biofilm formation. Potentially, the project will, in collaboration with the postdoctoral fellowship, probe into molecular aspects of the production of bioactivity, e.g. by generating transposon libraries and isolating non-producing mutants.

Required skills :

* A master’s degree (M.Sc.) in microbiology, biotechnology, civil engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a master’s degree in microbiology
* A keen interest in research especially microbiology and the ability to be self motivated
* Good applied skills in e.g. bacterial physiology and ecology. Proficiency in written and spoken English

Last date 7th November 2008 at noon.
