ENGAGEMENT OF RESEARCH Personnel for various research projects

through Walk in Interview

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage four (04) Research Personnel (2-JRFs, 1 JRF/SRF & 1-Technical Assistant) for its various research projects/cells through a Walk-in-Interview on 14th November 2008. The details of the available positions along with their essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below.

Project # 1

An integrated approach to reduce the vulnerability of local community to environmental degradation in the Western Himalayas.

(01 – JRF)

Duration: Three years.

Essential Qualification

Masters degree in Botany/Zoology/Environmental Sciences/Forestry from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

At least 6 month field/research experience of environmental monitoring in Himalayas, including carbon sequestration, provision of water nutrient recycling and socioeconomic surveys.

Description of Work

The major objectives of this project are to (a) enumerate the key ecosystem functions of the Western Himalayan forested landscapes and estimate the values of major services provided by it (b) study the patterns of interaction between the local livelihoods and natural ecosystems, (c) identify the key drivers of land use and resource use changes that have taken place in the region and assess their implications for ecosystem integrity and vulnerability of the people, (d) identify ecosystem management actions and sustainable livelihood options that may reduce the vulnerability of communities to environmental degradation, and to (e) promote the integration of this approach into emerging policy frameworks for sustainable use of natural resources in the region.

Ecological assessment of timberline ecotone in western Himalaya with special reference to climate change and anthropogenic pressures.

(01 – JRF)

Project Duration: Till 16th May 2011.

Essential Qualification

M.Sc. in Botany/Environmental Science/Forestry/Wildlife Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Work experience in the Himalayan region and in the field of Remote Sensing & GIS.

Description of Work

Study the status and dynamics, selected indicator species of flora, abundance of selected mammals and pheasants in the disturbed and undisturbed ecotones and spatio-temporal changes using remote sensing and GIS.

Status of otters with special focus on Asian small-clawed otter Aonyx cinerea in the Southern Western Ghats, Anamalai and Nilgiri Hills of Southern India.

(01 – Technical Assistant)

Duration: 9 months.

Essential Qualification

Masters degree in Zoology/Wildlife Sciences/Forestry from a recognized University with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Experience of survey of waterways for aquatic wildlife such as fish, crabs, amphibians, turtles and otters.

Description of Work

The major objectives of this project are to (a) determine the status of otters in the southern Western Ghats, Anamalai and Nilgiri hills (ii) identify the factors governing their distribution in the region, and (iii) to examine the threat to otter populations in the region.

Project # 4

Determining the offshore distribution and migration of Olive Ridley sea turtle Lepidochelys olivacea along the east coast of India.

(01 – JRF or SRF)

Duration: Till 31st December 2009.

Essential Qualification

Masters degree in Marine biology/Marine Science/Zoology/Life Sciences/ Wildlife Science/Ecology/Environmental sciences with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Research experiences in major marine animals especially on sea turtles ecology and animal tracking. Those who have more than one year research experience in sea turtle studies and in GIS-Remote sensing may be considered for SRF.

Description of Work

Monitoring the both offshore and onshore sea turtles. Ecological data including satellite data interpretation, analysis and report writing.

GENERAL:

  1. For the position of JRFs/TAs, the age shall not be more than 28 years as on 10th November 2008. Upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years, as in case of candidates (SRF/JRF/TA) belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and physically handicapped categories.

  2. Selected candidates for the position of Junior Research Fellow (JRF) will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 12,000/- per month, the fellowship of Senior Research Fellow (SRF) is Rs. 14,000/- (consolidated) per month and for Technical Assistant (TA) will be 6,400/- (consolidated) per month.

  3. All research personnel may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute subject to the condition that HRA payable, in no case, shall be more than the rates payable to Central Govt./WII Employee(s) in that area. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules of the Institute, amended from time to time.

  4. Engagement on the above positions will be purely on a temporary basis initially and may be extended for further period depending upon the requirement and the tenure of project.

  5. The selection of the candidate will be based on Walk-in-Interview to be held on 14th November 2008 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun.

  6. Canvassing in any form is liable to rejection of the candidature.

  7. Interviews will be conducted on 14th November 2008 and the registrations of candidates will begin by 09:00 A.M. onwards.

  8. Candidates should bring the duly filled-in applications with attested true copies of testimonials of educational qualifications, research experience, extra curricular activities, date of birth etc., along with copies of mark sheets of all examinations. All original documents should be produced at the time of registration.

  9. Candidates may apply separately for each advertised position. In any case, the candidate may not be allowed to apply for more than two advertised positions.

  10. Candidates working in other Organizations/Universities should bring their applications forwarded through proper channel. In such cases the candidates will have to produce `No Objection Certificate’ at the time of Interview.

  11. Applications without enclosures and/or incomplete in any respect shall be liable to rejection.

  12. Two way travel expenses will be paid to the candidates, selected for the project(s). The expense will be limited to actual 2nd class rail/bus fare by the shortest route from his/her place of stay/residence.

  13. The Institute will not provide accommodation for candidates appearing for the interview.

  15. The Director, WII reserves the right to reject any candidature in view of incomplete information provided by the candidate or for any other reason.
