About the seminar

One of the aspirations from modern biotechnology has been to provide sustainable and higher yielding agriculture systems to feed our ever increasing population. After the success of Bt cotton, genetically modified food/vegetable crops are all set to make entry in our country.

There are apprehensions regarding the suitability of these crops and there possible impact on human and animal health and to the environment. Government of India, through Department of Biotechnology and Indian Council of Medical Research, after thorough discussions and consultations, has prepared exhaustive guidelines and protocols for the safety assessment of genetically modified crops for different end user applications. Efforts are also being made towards capacity building and awareness in our country on this relatively new area to help understand the whole development in right perspective with open mind and make an informed, objective and science based decision. The seminar is a follow up activity under the Norman E Borlaug International Agriculture Fellows Program of USDA and aims to cover various aspects of GM crops including status and issues in our country.

Who can participate

The seminar is open to those who are interested in this new and exciting area. Mid career scientists / faculty members working in R&D institutions / universities / colleges, persons working in seed and allied industries and government agriculture department with life science, environmental science and agriculture background are especially invited to participate.
