The International PhD Program

The Biozentrum of the University of Basel provides an internationally renowned research environment for Molecular Biology studies with three focal areas (Infection Biology, Growth and Development, Neurobiology) and two core programs (Structural Biology & Biophysics and Genome Scale Biology & Bioinformatics) dedicated to basic molecular and biomedical research and advanced training.

Admission

Admission is competitive and is achieved through a selection procedure. Applicants must hold, or anticipate receiving before enrolment, a university degree that would formally qualify them to enter a PhD or equivalent program in their home country (MSc., Diploma, DEA etc.).

APPLICATIONS

General requirements
To be accepted for graduate studies at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel, applicants must hold a university degree that would formally qualify them to enter a PhD or equivalent program in their home country (MSc., Diploma, DEA etc.).

The Biozentrum international PhD program offers two independent tracks of application and enrollment:

In track ONE a student can directly apply to any group leader of the Biozentrum and will be interviewed and selected for on an individual basis. The funding for these positions comes from the portfolio of the respective group leaders. You can apply to the group leaders all over the year. Starting dates for track ONE are negotiated on an individual basis.

Open PhD positions

In track TWO students apply for one of the fellowships Werner Siemens-Foundation (WSF). There is only one deadline per year (30th of June) and shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews end of August. A finished Master is not a requirement for application, allowing students to sign up for the program during the course of their Master Thesis. For track TWO starting dates should be no later than half a year after admission into the program.

The conditions for PhD students of track ONE and TWO are very similar. A PhD usually last 3-4 years. At the Biozentrum there is a clear tendency towards 3 years with 4 years being the maximum possible. Each student will be guided by an advisory Committee of internal and external experts in the field. The program also offers an attractive collection of lecture series and courses, reflecting the entire Molecular Biology research strongholds at the Biozentrum and partner Institutes in Basel.

The salaries are Swiss National Science Foundation based.
