Project Concept Rapid industrialization, urbanization and population growth in the developing world has increased morbidity and mortality due water and food-borne pathogens. It is now understood that the genome repertoire of pathogens undergoes subtle fine-tuning by dissemination of anti-microbial agent resistance genes as well as environmental factors. This demands new strategies for pathogen detection since classical techniques are labor intensive, time consuming and not always reliable. We are exploring development of real-time PCR probes, Gold Nano-Particle Probes, PCR arrays and Biochips for detection of virulence genes of pathogenic microbes in water and food.
