ELIGIBILITY:
Applicants should be young faculty members / Scientists with Ph.D. degree, or registered Ph.D. students working in research departments of Colleges or Universities / Research Institutes in India. Preference will be given to the candidates working or intended to work on the gene silencing based methods in their research programme.
APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Candidates should submit the filled in registration form to Dr. G. Kumaresan, Convener, UGC-NRCBS Winter School on Gene Silencing, School of Biological Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai – 625021 on or before 8th January 2010. Applications should be forwarded by their research supervisor/Head of the department or Head of the institution. Applications sent via E-mail are also accepted, but the duly forwarded hard copy should reach within a week. The candidates will be selected based on the qualification and research interests.
TA/DA & ACCOMMODATION:
UGC-NRCBS, Madurai Kamaraj University will provide TA/DA (Ist class non-AC / IIIrd AC by train) to the participants as per the Madurai Kamaraj University regulations. Participants should produce a certificate that they have not been given TA/DA by their host institute (Head of the Department / Institute) and the training period shall be considered ‘On Duty’ by the participant's parent institution. Accommodation will be arranged at the faculty guest house in Madurai Kamaraj University campus.
ABOUT THE WINTER SCHOOL
Gene silencing or gene knockdown through RNAi based approaches are being extensively used in many areas of life sciences. By this approach, one can selectively silence the expression of gene of interest. Due to easiness and amenability for high-throughput screening, numerous breakthrough findings in biomedical sciences have been made by utilizing gene silencing approaches in cellular models.
In the winter school, hands on training will be provided to design, perform and analyze the transient and long-term silencing and over-expression of specific genes in human cell lines. A series of experiments to track the impact of silencing and over-expression also will be performed. The experiments of this winter school on gene silencing are designed to train the researchers involved in the functional investigation of genetic elements using the eukaryotic cell line models. Specifically, the hands-on training provided in the school will be useful for the researchers utilizing cell line models in the areas like functional genomics, bio-medical sciences, drug screening, assay development, molecular and cellular analysis of gene functions, gene manipulation in mammalian system, etc.
The course comprises of lecture sessions by experts in the field, apart from practical sessions. In order to provide quality hands-on training to participants, more than 80% of the time in the winter school will be allocated for the practical sessions. Protocol/manual and other relevant documents will be provided to the participants. Each experiment will be preceded by a detailed practical instruction and followed by a session on troubleshooting. After the completion of this winter school, participants will be able to plan and execute gene silencing based experiments for wide range of applications.
