Workshop on
Characterization of Microbial Communities Associated with Polluted Environments using Polyphasic Approach
Date: 07–16th February, 2010
Organised by
Microbial Type Culture Collection and Gene Bank
Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH)
Sector 39A, Chandigarh – 160036, India
Background
Our understanding of extant and extinct biological diversity, especially that of microorganisms, plays a critical role in the advancement of biotechnology. Microbial diversity is enormous and an unseen resource of the country that needs to be conserved for future generations. Recent advancements in bacterial systematics have led to ‘polyphasic taxonomic approach’ which aims to generate all genotypic, phenotypic and phylogenetic information of a bacterial taxon. The resulting biological data of the organisms find relevance and implications in biotechnological research such as production of bioactive molecules, microbial transformations, ecology and bioremediation using bacterial isolates or consortia.
This workshop aims to provide hands-on experience to PhD students, post-doctoral fellows and faculty members from academic institutions/ universities etc. in characterizing the bacterial communities using selected phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and molecular phylogenetic analysis techniques.
The renowned bacteriologists from India and abroad will introduce the participants to the recent advances in bacterial systematics using polyphasic taxonomic approach and their applications in molecular microbial ecology and environmental biotechnology.
The participants will acquire experience on isolation and characterization of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria from soil samples obtained from polluted environments. The participants would learn the following techniques: serial dilution and plating technique, enrichment of soil samples with pollutants, extraction and analysis of the pollutants, cultivation of bacteria, DNA extraction from environmental samples, Southern hybridization, estimations of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) and G+C content of genomic DNA, thin layer chromatography, gel electrophoresis including denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of 16S rRNA gene, gene sequencing and phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence-data using selected phylogenetic softwares.
How to apply?
Interested PhD students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty members from academic/ research institutes/ universities are requested to submit the following:
1) Completed registration form in the prescribed format,
2) Curriculum vitae, and
3) A short write-up (approx. 500 words) on how this workshop would benefit you/ your organization, to:
