HBIGS, the Helmholtz International Graduate School for Cancer Research (HIGS), and the Gesellschaft zur Förderung der molekularbiologischen Forschung in Heidelberg e.V. (GFM) jointly offer competitive MSc/PhD fellowships to outstanding applicants from all over the world, enabling them to enroll in the MSc/PhD programs Molecular Biosciences or Molecular Biotechnology, respectively, at the Faculty of Biosciences.
What do we offer to MSc/PhD fellowship holders?
• Fellowships amounting to € 8,000 p.a., granted for up to 1.5 years (reviewed after 1 year), including a Service package offered by the Studentenwerk (upon request)
• One travel stipend to attend a scientific conference
• Opportunity to obtain an MSc degree within 1.5 years
• "Fast-track"-admittance to HBIGS or HIGS after successful completion of the MSc program.
• Associate member status at HBIGS or HIGS, respectively, during the time of your MSc program. This includes:
• Participation in an extracurricular literature and research seminar series
• Access to advanced PhD training courses offered by HBIGS or HIGS
• Access to extracurricular and extramural activities offered by HBIGS
• Free access to the HBIGS Career Service
Who is eligible to apply for a fellowship?
All applicants who are eligible to apply to the respective MSc programs can apply for a fellowship.

IMPORTANT! HBIGS and HIGS are not involved in the application & admission process of the MSc programs, i.e. you have to apply separately to the respective MSc programs in Molecular Biosciences (information about application and admission) or Molecular Biotechnology (information about application and admission) .
How can you apply for a fellowship?
Applications for an MSc fellowship can be submitted from 01 Feb - 31 Mar 2010, exclusively via the HBIGS online application system.

All applicants for a fellowship are requested to provide the following information:

1. Secondary school leaving certificate
Submit with your application your Secondary school leaving certificate (equivalent to German "Abitur").
2. Academic records
Submit your official transcripts of academic records from every postsecondary institution attended for at least one year as a full-time student. Academic records should give information on the type and content of courses taken (Diploma supplement) and the grades you received. Your rank in class should be noted whenever possible. If the institution does not issue records in German, English, or French, original language records must be submitted with translations. At this stage of the application process you can submit uncertified documents.
3. Statement of Purpose
Write a statement (± 500 words) describing your motivation and preparation for the selected field of study. Describe the area of biology you find most interesting, your previous research experience, your future career plans and other aspects of your background and interests which may aid the admissions committee in evaluating your aptitude and motivation for the respective programme. You are not requested to provide proof of your financial situation.

5. Proof of English language ability
If your native language is not English, proof of an adequate command of spoken and written English is required for admission.
Proof can be provided either by
a) a TOEFL certificate (www.TOEFL.org) (Score requirements: Paper based: 570+, Computer based: 230+, Internet based: 90+),
b) an IELTS certificate (www.ielts.org) (Score requirements: band 6.5+) ,
c) a Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE ).
d) Applicants who took part in an undergraduate program in which the language of instruction was English or German are asked to provide a suitable certificate from their Faculty.
6. One reference letter
Add a reference letter from a Professor who supervised a course, seminar or research practical you attended.
7. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores (optional)
The scores of the GRE Subject Test in Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology are not required for application but a good score will strengthen your application. Scores must be from an examination taken within the last three years.
How are candidates selected?
The selection of candidates for a fellowship involves three steps:
1. Evaluation of application documents
Applications will be reviewed by a committee of scientists. This step might include pre-interviews by phone. Applicants who passed the first round of selection will be invited to take a written Subject test.

2. Subject test
The test compares to the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Subject Test in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology. For further information and preparation for the test, please, refer to www.gre.org. The test will take place in the home countries of the applicants or will be conducted online, provisionally on 21-23 Apr 2010.

3. Personal interviews in Heidelberg
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview in Heidelberg on 10/11 May 2010.
