Training Course on “Bioinformatics: A Practical Approach”
Date: April 19 - 24 , 2010
The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India established a Sub-DIC under BTIS program at North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong in November 1999. This Bioinformatics Centre, in the last one decade has grown to become the nodal centre for N.E. Bioinformatics Network (NEBInet) in the region.
The Centre’s facilities include Apple High Performance Computing Facility, networked computers with Leased Line Internet Connectivity (4 Mbps), Accelrys Gene 2.5, Matlab 7.0, iNquiry Bioinformatics cluster modules, SPSS and other application softwares and good training facilities.
Objectives
To generate awareness and provide hands-on training related to Bioinformatics.

• Bioinformatics Database resources for wetbench scientists
• Navigating sequenced genomes
• Sequence similarity searches
• Finding regulatory elements in DNA sequences
• Multiple Sequence Alignment and inferring phylogenetic trees from sequence data
• Protein structure, classification and prediction

Methodology: Lectures, Demos and Hands-on Sessions
Level of participants
Research Scholars/Scientists/Teachers in Life Sciences
Prerequisites: Knowledge in Basics of Computer and Molecular Biology
Registration Fee: Rs. 1,500/- for students and Rs. 2,000/- for working persons (Includes course work material and lunch; may be paid in cash on spot).
There will be a maximum of 30 participants. The participants must be sponsored and authorised by their parent institution.
Boarding and Lodging: Arrangements can be made subject to request and availability in the University Guest House.
