11th April 2010

Summary:

A PhD, advanced learning, an immediate job – what should be the first step and what should be the goal? The choice is not easy! But we rarely take time off to discuss such important aspects of career planning and preparations. To help you in this regard, a half day seminar is organized on 11th April 2010. It could be a useful deviation on a Sunday to ponder over numerous career possibilities and explore the chance to measure your talent, skills and abilities in such contexts! The program intends to provide orientation and useful tips for career planning in general. There will also be a discussion session with experts to address queries from the participants. This is an ideal opportunity to those who are currently studying science or completed the same in the recent past. Due to a tilted ratio of number of degree holders to the actual jobs available, and the diversity of type of biotech-industry in India today, the program would be particularly apt for youngsters with life science background (i.e., biotechnology, bioinformatics, microbiology, biochemistry etc). No charges, but seats limited! Please scroll down to read details.

Background:

In this competitive and fast-changing world, the criteria for the jobs are also changing drastically. Apart from completing formal education, being aware of changing scenarios, preparing for job applications and building a career are crucial steps for anyone.

Unfortunately many of us do no get enough exposure that would help us to plan a career or prepare for the same. To grow into the employable status and then through a career path, it is essential to identify the pre-requisite credentials. The necessary qualities fall under two categories:

a) theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to specific domain(s), and
b) general personality traits.

The specification of these qualities in turn depends on a decent knowledge of following:

i. relevant future options (that is what type of jobs are available in which area and what are expected salaries),
ii. domain-capacities specific for each of the options (e.g., laboratory technical or programming skills and the types within them). and
iii. ways to attain those abilities (not all ‘capacity building’ comes from formal education).

The domains and the extent of depth of knowledge and skills, and the suitability of type of personality to different careers should be presented to students at various stages of education. However, an introduction to career planning and an overview of options has been one of the most important missing aspects of early college education, particularly in India.”1. To bridge the gap, we bring you a half day program in career planning.

Program contents:

A. Interactive sessions with lead lectures:
a. Why career planning is important, but difficult, today?
b. Job applications and preparations: from the HR perspective
B. Questions and answers in general (discussions on jobs vs. skills, preparations for
PhD-based research career, including applying for PhD abroad etc)
C. Assessment of participants strengths and weaknesses
