Walk in IntervieW  to Engage Research Fellows at Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage eleven (11) research fellows [01-Research Associate, 08-Junior Research Fellows, 01-Technical Assistant (TA) and 01-Project Biologist] through a Walk-in-Interview on Friday, 16th April 2010. The details of the available position along with essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below.

Details of project and positions

Project # 1 : Ecology of leopard (Panthera pardus) in Sariska Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan. (1 post-JRF)

Duration: Up to 05.09.2012

Essential Qualification : Masters Degree in Wildlife Biology/Wildlife Science/Environmental Science/ Forestry/Forest Management with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification: Experience in herbivore and carnivore population estimation, radio tracking, camera trapping and GIS & Remote Sensing.

Description of Work:The project aims to study ranging, movement patterns, habitat use and food habits of leopards, estimation of prey species, prepare habitat suitability map for leopard and its prey and suggest recommendations for effective management of leopard population in and around Sariska Tiger Reserve.

Project # 2 :Impact of Global Change on Species Composition in Western Himalayas: Himachal Pradesh. (1 post-JRF)

Duration: Three years.

Essential Qualification:

Masters Degree in Botany/Forestry/Wildlife Science/ Environmental Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification:Work experience in the Himalayan region and knowledge of Remote Sensing & GIS.

Description of Work :Study the vegetation structure and composition, impact of global change, land use and impact of invasive species on floristic diversity with emphasis on changes in species composition, species transition and species loss.

Project # 3 : Comparison of tiger (Panthera tigris) population estimated using non-invasive techniques of pug mark, camera trap and DNA based analysis of hair and scat in Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve. Phase-II: Estimation of tiger population. (1 post – JRF)

Duration: Up to 31.03.2011.

Essential Qualification: Masters Degree in Animal Genetics/Molecular Ecology/Biotechnology or M.V.Sc. in Animal Genetics with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification: Work experience in electrophoresis and molecular genetics using PCR based techniques, PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing/developing species specific characteristics.

Description of Work: Undertake for DNA extraction, PCR amplification and DNA sequencing for genotyping work for tiger samples.

Project # 4 : Panthera tigris genome: Implications in wildlife forensics.  (1 post – JRF)


Duration: Up to 31.03.2011.

Essential Qualification: Masters Degree in Animal Genetics/ Molecular Ecology/Biotechnology or M.V.Sc. in Animal Genetics with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Work experience in electrophoresis and molecular genetics using PCR based techniques, PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing/developing species specific characteristics.

Description of Work Undertake for DNA extraction, PCR amplification and DNA sequencing for genotyping work for tiger samples.

Project # 5 : Ecology and Conservation of the Himalayan Wolf. (1 post – JRF)

Duration: One year.

Essential Qualification Masters Degree in Wildlife Biology/Zoology/Forestry, with wildlife biology specialization with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification Field research experience in the Himalayan region; experience in the field of wildlife survey; Use of GIS and data analysis software.

Candidates with strong physical and mental abilities and a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of the Trans Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions with minimal logistic support may apply.

Description of Work: The project aims to collect baseline information about the status and distribution of Himalayan Wolf across the Indian Trans Himalayan region. This project involves extensive field work in the remote, rugged, high altitude regions of J&K, Himachal, Uttarakhand and Sikkim.

Project # 6  Diversity and conservation of endangered fish genetic resources of Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu. (1 post – JRF)

Duration: Three years.

Essential Qualification: Masters Degree in Wildlife Biology/Wildlife Science/Zoology/Environmental Science/Forestry/Fishery Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification :Experience in fish ecology, stream habitat assessment, fish genetics and captive breeding.

Description of Work The project aims to study diversity and distribution of stream fishes, habitat utilization patterns of stream fishes. Assessing genetic diversity among selected endangered species and captive breeding and ranching of threatened species.

Project # 7  Monitoring Land Use by Wildlife, Livestock and Humans in Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve. (02 : 01-JRF ‘Wildlife’ and 01-‘Biotechnology’)

Duration: Three years.

01-JRF ‘Wildlife’

Essential Qualification :Masters Degree in Wildlife Biology, Zoology / Forestry with wildlife biology specialization with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

i. Field research experience in the Himalayan region; experience in the field of wildlife sociology or park-people interface aspects; Use of GIS and data analysis software.
ii. Candidates with strong physical and mental abilities and a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of the Sikkim Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions with minimal logistic support may apply.

01-JRF ‘Biotechnology’

Essential Qualification Masters Degree in Biotechnology/Zoology with Biotechnology specialization with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

i. Research experience in molecular techniques and data analysis skills using software.

ii. Candidates, who have aptitude and desire to work in the research laboratory for longer duration of time, may apply.

Description of Work : The project aims to develop a spatial database on the land use patterns by wildlife, livestock and humans in Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve and develop a programme for monitoring the use of wildlife, livestock and humans in Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve. This project involves extensive and field work in the remote, rugged, high altitude regions of Sikkim Himalayan region and also extensive lab work related to dietary analysis, molecular genetic studies, and computer based modeling analysis.

Project # 8  : Wildlife Forensic Cell. (03 : 1 – RA, 1–TA and 1–Project Biologist)

Duration: One year (each).

01-Research Associate (RA)

Essential Qualification :Should posses a Ph.D degree in Molecular Biology/Animal Genetics with Masters in Bio-technology/Molecular Ecology/Animal Genetics or M.V.Sc. in Animal Genetics, with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

i. Work experience in electrophoresis and molecular genetics using PCR based techniques, PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing/ developing species specific characteristics.
ii. Good knowledge in biostatistics and multivariate techniques for use in DNA and animal genetics.
iii. Any other academic qualification related to work.

Description of Work

a. R.A. is required to work under supervision of Nodal Officer, Wildlife Forensic Cell for developing DNA based techniques and protocols for dealing wildlife offence cases.
b. To prepare protocols for identifying species from biological materials seized under wildlife offences.
c. Establish liaison with national and international forensic laboratories
d. To provide scientific input and assistance in organizing workshop by WII and other organizations.
e. To maintain proper record and files of all wildlife forensic cases.
f. To prepare annual requirement of equipment, glass wares, chemicals, plastic wares and maintain proper stock entries of these, and
g. To collect reference samples, and other work assigned by Nodal Officer.

01 post-Technical Assistant (TA)

Essential Qualification

Masters Degree in Forensic Science/Animal Genetics/Molecular ecology or M.V.Sc. Animal Genetics with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Work experience of DNA extraction and running electrophoresis, etc.

Description of Work

Required to assist in ongoing work related to DNA based techniques.

01 post -Project Biologist

Essential Qualification

Masters Degree in Wildlife Science/Forensic Science/Anatomy or M.V.Sc. Anatomy with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Work experience in identification of species based on morphological features from bones, feather, hair and other items. Good knowledge in biostatistics and multivariate. Any other academic qualification related to work.

Description of Work

Project Biologist is required to develop protocols for identification of species from morphological features of different items reported in the trade like skins, feather, bones, etc.

General

1. Candidate for the position of Research Associate (RA-I) should be below 40 years of age as on 10th April 2010 and the upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years for candidates belonging to SC/ST. For the position of Junior Research Fellow, Technical Assistant and Project Biologist, the age shall not be more than 28 years as on 10th April 2010. Upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women/physically handicapped categories.
2. Selected candidate for the position of Research Associate (RA-I) will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 16,000/- per month and selected candidate for the position of Junior Research Fellow and Project Biologist will be paid a consolidated emoluments of Rs. 12,000/- per month. The fellowship amount for the selected Technical Assistant is Rs. 9,600/- consolidated per month.
3. Selected candidates may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute subject to the condition that HRA payable, in no case, shall be more than the rates payable to Central Govt./WII Employee(s) in that area. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules of the Institute, amended from time to time.
4. Engagement on the above positions will be purely on a temporary basis initially and may be extended for further period depending upon the requirement and the tenure of project/cell.
5. The selection of the candidates will be based on Walk-in-Interview to be held on Friday, 16th April 2010 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun. The registration of candidates will begin by 09:30 A.M. onwards.
6. Canvassing in any form is liable to rejection of the candidature.
7. Candidates should bring the duly filled-in applications with attested true copies of testimonials of educational qualifications, research experience, extra curricular activities, date of birth etc., along with copies of mark sheets of all examinations. All original documents should be produced at the time of registration.
8. Applications without enclosures and/or incomplete in any respect shall be liable to rejection.
9. One way travel expenses will be paid to the selected candidate, upon joining the project and producing the proof of journey ‘tickets’. The expense will be limited to actual 2nd class rail/bus fare by the shortest route from his/her place of stay/residence.
10. The Institute will not provide accommodation for candidates appearing for the interview.
