POST-DOCTORAL position – Bioinformatician or computational biologist on Systems Biology applied to Immunology/Vaccinology
JOB SCOPE
The Barcelona Centre for International Health Research (CRESIB) is a global health research institute developed by some of the leading academic and biomedical research institutions in Barcelona together with the Catalan Government as a response to the new international health challenges of the XXI century. The centre is located at the Universitat de Barcelona School of Medicine and Teaching Hospital (Hospital Clínic) campus in the heart of Barcelona. CRESIB’s research program focuses on malaria and other international health areas, and has a longstanding and close collaboration with the Centro de Investigação em Saúde da Manhiça in Mozambique.
The Program of Malaria Immunopathology and Vaccines is seeking an enthusiastic Postdoctoral Fellow with a strong background in systems biology of hosts pathogens interactions and/or applied immunology/vaccinology, and an interest in malaria. The aim is to apply systems-based studies to advance our understanding of the high complexity of the immune system and vaccine responses to malaria. The research project will involve the analysis of immunological data from a systems biology perspective to identify functional networks and dynamic processes that are associated with naturally-acquired and vaccine induced protection, and ultimately prediction of immunological behavior and vaccine efficacy. Specific questions include: how immune responses are shaped in response to different stimuli; how host and pathogen responses evolve in real time, in relation to each other; whether markers that are diagnostic of desirable or undesirable immune responses can be found and new correlates of vaccine efficacy uncovered; how populations of different pathogens and host cell types interact to give rise to emergent properties such as protection and immunopathology.

REQUIRED EXPERTISE and QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctorate in biostatistics/bioinformatics or in systems biology, preferably in the fields of immunology, infectious diseases or related field. Experience in computational genomics involving the design and implementation of algorithms applied to the analysis of different biological data types. Postdoctorate in this field a strong plus.

  • Experience in statistics and in common bioinformatics tools, websites and data resources to analyse high-throughput data such as gene expression analysis (microarrays, RNAseq). Experience in retrieving, manipulating and managing data from public databases such as NCBI and Ensembl.

  • Strong analytical and programming skills. Knowledge of R and Bioconductor, mathematical modeling, informatics, and data integration and interpretation, including: transcriptional networks, protein interaction networks, functional interaction networks, gene signature identification and multi-dimensional data integration and qualitative and quantitative modeling

  • Knowledge of written and spoken English; knowledge of Spanish and Catalan a plus

  • Experience working in international environments

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Ability to meet deadlines

  • Ability to effectively work both as a team member within multidisciplinary groups and independently
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish the methodology and apply/refine algorithms and software tools to identify functional networks and dynamic quantitative models associated with immune protection as part of an interdisciplinary research team. The candidate will pursue research in close collaboration with experimental biologists.

  • Design, perform and analyze quantitative multi-level data generated and perform mathematical modeling to elucidate general principles governing emergent properties of complex systems that give rise to immunological functions

  • Provide support to the Biostatistics Unit at CRESIB

  • Participate in trainings and meetings

  • Participate in data interpretation and publication

  • Support the Principal Investigator in the daily functioning of the studies as requested

  • Other tasks and projects as directed by supervisor
Compensation for this position will be based on the applicant’s experience and qualifications. Own initiatives to obtain an external fellowship will be strongly supported, especially to jointly apply to a Marie Curie fellowship.
