ENBITECH AWARDS

On the occasion of the entry of Professor Sharad Chaphekar in the 75th year of his life on 25 November 2009, the ENBITECH (Environment and Biotechnology Foundation, Mumbai), are proud to institute ‘Vrikshasharad Awards’.

The excellence of Professor Sharad Chaphekar and of Dr C. S. Lattoo in the field of Environmental Science/Ecology and Taxonomy respectively, is well recognized nation wide. The awards would encourage the youth to develop excellence in the respective fields.

It will be given to the best dissertations in two subjects every year.

The dissertation will have to be based on extensive survey of relevant global literature, keen observations during field work in the country and incisive analysis of the reasoning made. It is expected that the conclusions drawn would lead to development of ideas for research/action programme in the subject and expand the knowledge base in the area. Length of the dissertation should be between 4000 and 5000 words only, including tables, diagrams, photographs, reference list, etc. presented in the format of a research paper/dissertation.

The topics for this year’s competition are:

Relevance of Darwinism today – an ecological perspective

and

Have we reached the dead-end of organic evolution? – a taxonomist’s view

Those intending to enter in the national-level contest should contact ENBITECH immediately, positively by 15 July 2010, for further details.

• Dissertations should be submitted, in electronic form, by 20 October 2010.
• All the entries will be judged by eminent scientists in respective fields.
• Nominees for the awards will be announced on 10 November 2010. The selected nominees will have to present their views on the topic (abridged version of the dissertation) in about 10 minutes, on 25 November 2010, in Mumbai. (Outstation candidates will be given travel subsidy.)
• Awards will be presented on 25 November 2010, in a semi-formal function.
• All quality entries will get recognition in the form of Merit Certificates. The Best entry for each topic will receive a cash award Rs 21,000 and a certificate of merit. Verdict of the expert judges will be final.
• Anyone – student, teacher, lay person interested in the subject – and within the age group of 21–32 is eligible to enter the contest. School/College/University teachers with less than five years of teaching experience are also eligible.
