PhD Studentship in Bionanoscience and Biophysics
A PhD studentship is available in the Bionanotechnology unit of the Nano Group. The Nano Group manages the new Southampton Fabrication Centre, a £100M clean room complex with state-of-the-art fabrication and characterization facilities which includes a clean room dedicated to bionanotechnology research. The Bionanotechnology unit comprises a large laboratory, located in the School of Chemistry, with all the facilities for optics, electronics and biomolecular work, including studies of biological cells. In autumn 2010, this lab will move to the new Institute for Life Sciences, which will accommodate the School of Biological Sciences together with groups from other departments that work at the life sciences interface.
This cross-disciplinary PhD project concerns suspended lipid bilayers in on-chip microwells, characterization of protein incorporation, and tracking of lipids and ion channels in the bilayer with fluorescence microscopy. We are looking for a motivated student with a good masters or undergraduate degree in an engineering, physical sciences or biomolecular sciences discipline. Experience with microfabrication, optics, or lipid bilayers would be a clear advantage. This position is part of a large high-throughput electrophysiology project. Although other researchers (in our lab and at Birkbeck College, University of London) will contribute to the microfabrication and the molecular biology, the PhD student will also be expected to gain experience in these areas as part of his/her cross-disciplinary training.
The PhD studentship is for 3.5 years, with a stipend at standard EPSRC rates (currently £13,290 per annum). Due to funding regulations we can only consider applications from UK/EU nationals or people who have been a non-student UK resident for three years or more(http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/students/pages/eligibility.aspx).
E-mail applications should be sent to Dr Maurits de Planque (mdp@ecs.soton.ac.uk) and include:
-
Covering letter stating the motivation for undertaking this studentship -
Curriculum Vitae with grades obtained for previous degrees -
Contact details of two referees
The successful candidate will start in October 2010.
Applications will be considered as they arrive.
