PhD – scholarship in Downstream processing and Protein purification
A 3-year PhD scholarship is available at the Department of Systems Biology, Centre for Microbial Biotechnology from 1 September 2010.
The position being offered is financed by an EU framework 7 grant in the area of Nano-Sciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and New Production Technologies in which 16 European and International partners (universities, small and large companies) are participating. The primary goal of the overall EU project is to demonstrate the use of magnetic nano-particle adsorbent based processing at pilot-scale for the production of food, feed and pharmaceuticals in the biotech industry.
You will be conducting your research at the Center for Microbial Biotechnology at the Institute for Systems Biology at the Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby Campus. The mission of the Center is ‘Through cutting-edge research in industrial biotechnology to provide world-leading education and training of graduates at all levels, and provide new technologies and solutions required for the advancement of industrial biotechnology.
Your research project will be centered around the research and development of magnetic adsorbent particles for the capture of proteins. You will work on identifying suitable ligands for protein capture, and methods for ligand coupling. Subsequently the use of the magnetic adsorbents in novel downstream processing at lab scale and pilot scale will be examined. There will be close collaboration with leading companies in magnetic particle manufacturing and in food ingredient production.
It is expected that you will travel to other partners in the project for learning new techniques, transfer of knowledge and to participate in demonstration activities at pilot scale, together with the participating companies. Furthermore you will travel to project meetings around Europe and present your research results.
The overall research project has started and financing has been received.
