MSc COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY ADMISSIONS – 2010-11

(Studentship :  Rs.5,000/- per month)

I. About the Course

Computational biology is a multidisciplinary area that involves application of computer science, mathematics and statistics to biological problems. It is related for example to computational and mathematical modelling of biological systems, bioinformatics, systems biology, computational genomics and proteomics. The Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India has initiated a network programme on MSc Computational Biology to meet the demand for trained manpower which is essential for such activities related to bioinformatics in the country. This programme is designed to expose the students to recent exciting developments in this area using the expertise available in different institutions.

Students with a Life Sciences, Physical and Mathematical Sciences background will be trained to cater to the Research & Development needs of the Universities, Research Institutions and Industry.

Pondicherry University will hold an All India Combined Entrance Examination for admission to two years M.Sc., Computational Biology Network Teaching Programme on behalf of the following participating Universities.

1) Anna University, Chennai (www.annauniv.edu)
2) Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai (www.mkuuniversity.org, www.biotechmku.org)
3) Pondicherry University, Pondicherry (www.pondiuni.edu.in, www.bicpu.edu.in)

The Bioinformatics Centre in each of the Universities will be responsible for the conduct of the course when is being funded by the Dept of Biotechnology, Govt of India.

II. Eligibility

Bachelor’s degree in any relevant area of Physical/ Chemical/ Life Sciences/
Mathematics/ Computer Science with Mathematics at +2 level and a minimum 55% of marks (or)
Bachelor of Engineering with a minimum 55% of marks (or)
M.B.B.S with Mathematics at +2 level and a minimum 55% of marks

III. Admission Procedure

a. Application form

Applications can be downloaded from the websites given below.

b. Filling of application form

• Application form has 3 pages. Page 1 & 2 are the application form and page 3
is the hall ticket.
• Due care should be taken in filling the application forms.
• All columns should be filled correctly and unambiguously
• Write NA against columns that are not applicable
• Fill in all the columns with complete information after going through the
information brochure. Incomplete/ false information will entail rejection of
application or cancellation of admission

c. Submission of forms

The filled in applications (pages 1 & 2) should be sent to The Centre Head, Centre for Bioinformatics, Pondicherry University, Puducherry – 605 014 along with a demand draft drawn in favor of The Finance Officer, Pondicherry University payable at Pondicherry for Rs. 300/- (For SC/ST candidates : Rs.150/-; Free of Cost for Physically/Visually Challenged candidates along with relevant certificates) so as to reach him on or before September 13, 2010

The Hall ticket (page 3) can be retained by the candidate and must be produced at the selected examination centre. The photographs should be attested by the Head of the passed out Institution or any Gazetted Officer of the Central/State Government.

Failure of production of hall ticket as per the guidelines will debar the candidate in appearing at the examination.

VI Entrance Examination

The entrance examination will be conducted on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at the following seven centres, Chennai, Pondicherry, Madurai, New Delhi, Pune, Kolkata and Hyderabad

If there are not enough applicants choosing any of the centres, the candidate will be allotted another nearest Centre.

The entrance examination will be of two hours duration

The question paper consists of 100 multiple choice questions in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Life Sciences, Computer Science and Statistics. Negative marking will be applicable.

V Selection Procedure:

The candidates will be admitted as per the merit list of the entrance examination and the allotment of the Universities will be done as per the preferences given vis-à-vis merit in the entrance examination. Request for change of University after the admission will not be entertained.
In case of a tie in entrance examination marks it shall be resolved by applying the following criteria one after the other, till it is resolved:
(a) First Criterion: The candidates with more positive marks in the entrance examination
(b) Second Criterion: The candidates with less negative marks in the entrance
examination.
(c) Third Criterion: Date of Birth (elder be placed on the top)

VI Reservations

Reservation as per the Government of India will be followed
Gen – 6 OBC – 3 (Non Creamy Layer), SC - 2, ST – 1 for each University
(Rules of interchangablity among SCs and STs are applicable, wherever necessary to fill up the number of vacancies)

VII Scholarships

All the selected candidates will be eligible to receive scholarship of Rs.5,000/- per month.

VIII. Tuition fees

Tuition fees shall be charged from the students as per the fee structure of the respective University
