Special Project Scientist/ Scientist(Post Doctoral)-Maize Breeding

CIMMYT- India seeks applications from Indian nationals for Maize Molecular Breeder position, to be based at its sister institute ICRISAT, in Patancheru, Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh).

About CIMMYT:  International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT, www.cimmyt.org) is an internationally funded non-profit scientific research and training organization. One of 15 International Institutes under the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR, www.cgiar.org), CIMMYT has its global headquarters in Mexico. The Asia Regional Maize Program of CIMMYT is hosted by its sister organization, ICRISAT, at its headquarters in Patancheru, Hyderabad.

CIMMYT’s mission is to reduce poverty and enhance food security in the developing world by increasing the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of maize and wheat-based agricultural systems while protecting the natural resource base.

The Job: CIMMYT is looking for an innovative, results-oriented agricultural scientist with excellent skills in plant molecular breeding to support the development of high-yielding, abiotic stress-tolerant maize germplasm. The Maize Molecular Breeder will focus on marker-assisted germplasm enhancement applications for South and South East Asia.

Primary responsibilities include:
  • Support breeding programs focusing on improving the stress tolerance of source germplasm targeted at South and South East Asia
  • Coordinate the genotyping and phenotyping of Marker Assisted Recurrent Selection (MARS) populations for priority traits.
  • Identify and validate gene/QTL-based breeder-ready markers for prioritized traits.
  • Technical backstopping and capacity strengthening of the national partners in maize molecular breeding
  • Performing statistical analysis, interpreting data and making selections.
  • Prepare project reports.
Candidate Profile / qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Plant breeding
  • Familiarity with field- and lab-based techniques relevant to maize germplasm characterization and development, with a background of quantitative genetics. This includes knowledge of experimental designs, management of glass house, and field management.
  • Track record in applying molecular marker-based approaches for genetic analyses and/or improvement of oligogenic and complex traits in crop plants
  • Excellent computer skills and experience in using relevant software for statistical, biometrical and molecular marker analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to publish in refereed scientific journals.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English. An ability in spoken Hindi and/or Telugu is desirable.
  • Interest in international agricultural research and development
  • Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team
  • Be ready to travel as per requirement of project activities
Compensation: This position will be initially for two years, and renewable based on the performance of the incumbent. An attractive compensation will be offered.
