CENTRE FOR GENOMICS MOLECULAR AND HUMAN GENETICS
M. Sc. MOLECULAR AND HUMAN GENETICS
The Centre for Genomics at Jiwaji University offers outstanding interdisciplinary training and research opportunities for graduate students coming from life science and medical background, who want to pursue their career in the field of Molecular and Human Genetics. The goal of the Centre for Genomics is to prepare young minds from different disciplines for a successful research career and to generate well trained and skilled man power in this super specialty field of Molecular and Human Genetics. In addition, the students who have completed the course shall have better job prospects in R & D divisions of pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, whose numbers are rapidly growing in India. Above all, the students pursuing the course shall have the potential and choice to devote themselves in basic research in Cell and Molecular Biology, Human Genomics, Clinical Genetics and Biotechnology.
Academic activities
The Masters’ Program in Molecular & Human Genetics covers a period of 2 years with admissions at the beginning of July. The course comprises 4 semesters of 6 months duration each. The students shall carry out a short project work (dream project designed by the students themselves) in the subject related to the course under the supervision of the faculty involved and submit the dissertation report along with a presentation for evaluation. The students will participate in weekly seminars and journal clubs, to meet the needs in their aim to become an interdisciplinary researcher. The syllabus of this course is so designed to cover major topics of the UGC-CSIR NET examination. The detailed syllabus can be downloaded from our website, www.jugenomics.org.in
Faculty
Prof. P. K. Tiwari (Coordinator), Prof. I. K. Patro and Prof. O. P. Agrawal
Visiting Faculty: Dr. M. S. Rohilla, DBT, New Delhi; Prof. Veena Agawal, GR Medical College, Gwalior, Prof. B. R. Srivastava, Cancer Res. Inst. & GRMC, Gwalior.
The research team at the Centre for Genomics is also involved in the teaching and practical training of the students.
Scientists and academicians, who are expert in this subject, from various institutes and universities visit regularly, deliver lectures and actively interact with students.
Infrastructure
The Centre for Genomics has sophisticated infrastructure with state- of- art technology instruments and equipments. The department is equipped with spacious classrooms and laboratories, tissue culture facility, Biosafety lab, PCR room, and microscopy room. The equipment list includes Real time PCR, Thermocycler, Gel documentation system, 2D Gel electrophoresis system, Milli-Q Water Purifier, Biosafety cabinet, CO2 incubator, Cooling water bath, UV-Visible spectrophotometer and Transilluminator, to name a few. The Centre is also equipped with high quality microscopes including Fluorescence, Bright field, Inverted and Stereozoom microscopes from Leica, Germany.
Achievements
The Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, New Delhi, has substantially supported the Centre for Genomics to develop equipment, lab and library facilities of the department. A good number of students have qualified national level examinations like NET/GATE and are also eligible to appear for DBT sponsored JRF fellowship program.
Research and Training
The ongoing research programs at the Centre for Genomics include study on Human Genome Diversity with special reference to primitive tribes in this region, identification of molecular genetic markers of disease susceptibility, cellular and molecular biology of stress, molecular pathogenesis of cancer, clinical genetics of inherited diseases, genetic conservation of endangered species, etc. These programs are funded by various government agencies, including ICMR, DST and DBT, which have generated a self-sufficient laboratory in many respects. The Centre has already organized four short-term hands-on training workshops for teachers and research scientists on Molecular biology and clinical cytogenetics techniques and Bioinformatics tools, sponsored by DBT, CSIR, New Delhi and MPCST, Bhopal.
Placement
Previous students who have passed out from the Centre for Genomics have either been recruited by several well known companies, like Gulf Pharmaceuticals, Novartis, Wipro, Tata Chemicals, Cadila or working at various prestigious research institutions in India and abroad for their PhD (e.g., ACTREC, BHU, DU, CDFD, CNCI, IISC, CCMB, IGIB, Jiwaji University, Texas University, University of California, USA, Dublin University, Ireland, to name a few).
Eligibility
Students who have passed their graduation on 10 + 2 + 3 pattern in biological and veterinary sciences, pharmacy, engineering/technology (in Biotechnology), 4 years B.Sc. in physician assistant course, medicine (MBBS) or BDS, with at least 55% marks are eligible to apply. The mode of selection is based on the common entrance examination conducted by Jiwaji University. The available seats are (Open: 10, Payment: 05, NRI: 02).
