Applications are invited from highly motivated students for admission to the Ph.D. programme beginning in August 2011 at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research – Thiruvananthapuram (IISER-TVM).

Eligibility criteria

Biological Sciences

Candidates must satisfy any one of the following criterions to apply for the Ph.D. programme in the School of Biology at IISER-TVM starting from 1st August 2011.
  1. Masters degree in Biological/Chemical/Physical/Mathematical/ Allied Medical Sciences or a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Medicine. 60% marks or equivalent is desirable.
  2. Qualifying in one of the following national level tests with validity as on 1st of August 2011: CSIR-UGC-JRF/DBT-JRF/GATE/ICMR JRF.
The second requirement (qualifying in a national test) is waived for applicants interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution.

Selection procedure:
  1. All shortlisted candidates are required to appear for a written aptitude test. For candidates whose research interests are in the area of Ecology and Evolution, a written aptitude test in this subject area is mandatory. Candidates interested in any other area of Biological Sciences, must take a written aptitude test consisting of reasoning problems in Science and Mathematics.
  2. Candidates can appear for ONLY ONE of these written aptitude tests.
  3. Only candidates who qualify the written aptitude test will appear for an interview.
Mere fulfilling the eligibility criterion does not entitle a candidate to be called for the written aptitude test.

Research Areas:

Biochemistry, Ecology and Evolution, Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Cell Biology, Genetics and Genomics, Microbiology, Plant Biology, Structural Biology

Completed applications (along with Demand Draft for Rs.200/-[Rs.100/- for SC/ST] drawn in favour of the Registrar, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram) should be sent to The Dean (Academics), Application for the Ph.D. programme at the School of ________, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram, Computer Science Building, CET Campus, Engineering College PO, Thiruvananthapuram – 695016, Kerala so as to reach on or before April 11, 2011.
