ABOUT UGC-NETWORKING RESOURCE CENTRE IN BILOGICAL SCIENCES

University Grants Commission, New Delhi has created Networking Resource Centers in various subjects at leading University Departments/ Research Institutions in India. The major objectives of the Centers are to promote collaborative research, to provide access to advanced research facilities and to impart training to young researchers in frontier areas of the respective subjects. School of Biological Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University has established a UGC-Networking Resources Centre in Biological Sciences in the year 2008.

UGC-NRCBS, MKU is functioning as resource Centre for training and research collaborations with state-of-art infrastructure facilities in Biological Sciences. The activities of the UGC-NRCBS include:

i) organizing Summer and Winter Schools,
ii) providing guidance to Ph.D. students of other institutes in learning advanced research methodologies,
iii) extending support for Ph.D. students who lack equipments/ laboratory facilities and iv) strengthening the collaborative research initiatives in Biological Sciences among Universities and Research Institutes. UGC-NRCBS conducts series of Winter and Summer Schools on various themes. Researchers from all over the country are trained in these Winter/ Summer Schools. The theme of this Summer School is "Immunotechnology".

ABOUT THE SUMMER SCHOOL

This course is based on well thought-out objectives to stimulate and strengthen the technical skills related to various immunological techniques pertaining to research and academic purposes. The course encompasses the techniques of humoral and cell mediated functional immunoassays of basic and applied nature. It includes theory and practical training in teaching and research techniques in various aspects of immunology to enable the participants to reproduce the same in research! teaching programme in their institution. Both conventional and applied immunotechniques will be covered. Emphasis will be given for individual hands-on-training in all practicals.

The Summer School provides a hands-on training on various immunological tools such as, bleeding techniques, immunizations protocols, antigen-antibody interactions using gel-based assays, T & B cell separation, NIH two-stage lymphocytotoxity testing, serological typing of HLA, functional assays for T & B cells, CD4/ CD8 enumeration using immunofluorescence, antibody purification and quantification, complement mediated functional assays, serum immunoelectrophoresis, ELISA and Western blotting for pathogen detection. In addition to this, the participants will be given hands on training in basic serological and agglutination tests pertaining to immunological research, diagnostics and health-care institutes.
