Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) plays an important role in the international trade and commerce and also in the industrial, economic and social development of a nation. It protects the rights of Individuals and businesses who have transformed their ideas into property, by granting rights to the owners of those intellectual properties. Such legal rights allow the right holders to exclude the unauthorized commercial use of their creations I invention5 by third persons. The development of the IPR legislation in our country has been in parallel with the international scenario. One can agree that the first best IPR policies are not only to minimize the transaction costs and conflict of interests but they provide incentive5 to invest on innovation which in turn maximizes wealth of a nation. There is therefore an urgent need for awareness and capacity building in IPRs and initiate measures to ensure that Intellectual property is protected and any violation of IP laws is dealt with expeditiously by swift enforcement action throughout the country.

The general awareness of the R&D staff 01 Indian institutions about legal and ethical aspects in Indian and foreign Intellectual Property Protection in the area of natural products is inadequate. Therefore, the workshop is Intended to throw light on IPR issues in this area. It i5 the need of the day to share knowledge and experimental results in the field of Science and Technology. This workshop would help in promoting exchange 01 knowledge and facilitate cross fertility of ideas among he scientists, industrialists, traders and farmers with common goals. It will provide a platform for all the researchers and Industrialists to interact and discuss various breakthroughs, bottlenecks and recent developments in the areas of IPR. Taking all the above aspects in to consideration the Department of Botany, Bharathiar University will be organizing a two day National Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights · Opportunities, Issues and Challenses.
