About the Programme: Biotechnology is a rapidly developing multidisciplinary science having applications in several fields.

Currently biotechnology raises new challenges and hopes in everyday life. Biotechnology is also surrounded by many ethical, societal proprietary and  regulatory issues. No area of technology presents more complexity than biotechnology. One reason for this is the rapid development of scientific disciplines, such as molecular biology, microbiology, cell biology, developmental biology, immunology, etc., which produce novel subject matter to be protected.

Examples include cloned genes, nucleic acid probes, transgenic and cloned animals, gene chips, monoclonal antibodies, chimeric antibodies, humanized antibodies, enzymes, and the uses of many of these novel materials in diagnostics, therapeutics and the production of still  further materials. Many of the developments in intellectual property law have a unique application to biotechnology, such as the laws and regulations relating to biological deposits, sequence listings, patentability of ESTs, and the nonobviousness of biotechnology processes. However, awareness and knowledge in this area is very limited.

Hence there is every need in orienting manpower to current trends and issues surrounding biotechnology including biosafety, IPRs, bioethics etc. More so, the research and development in biotechnology is surrounded by the managerial issues viz; human resources, marketing,  operations, finance, etc.

Hence, the programme is devoted to illustrate and discuss about the developments in biotechnology and the emerging issues with specific reference to R&D.
