About the 'Winter School The growing need for understanding the basic molecular mechanisms behind multi drug resistance, tumor progression, pathogen escaping from the Immune system, production of novel antibiotics/ enzymes etc., will greatly help us to embark on to finding out solutions which will be of value on Human health care. Mutagenesis is a process by which the genetic Information of an organism is altered into a stable manner resulting in a heritable mutation which leads, by and large an altered phenotype. It occurs spontaneously in nature or can also due to exposure of mutagens.

Mutagenesis is a powerful technique for generating mutations randomly or In a desIred region! gene in the living system. Mutations are the raw material for the genetic variation and without mutation evolution could not have taken place. This valuable tool in bacterial system will pave way to decipher the function of unknown gene( s), understanding a novel pathway and improving the characteristic function of a gene with useful properties.

Undoubtedly, without creating a mutation or altering the gene one cannot study the function of the gene of interest.

This Winter School is designed to give ample amount of opportunity to the participants, which will enable them to understand the power associated with the mutagenesis techniques in bacterial system. The workshop will consist of genes of lectures and practical sessions by experts in this field.

This workshop is aimed in such a way that the participants will be able to plan. and execute experiments like survival curve, mutagenesis using physical, chemical and biological agents, isolation of antibiotic resistant mutants, auxotrophic mutants, localized mutagenesis, transposon mutagenesis, PCR based site-directed mutagenesis and other modem techniques related to mutagenesis.

Applications are invited from research scholars, young faculty members. and Scientists working in research Departments of Colleges or Universities/Research Institutes in India. Preference will be given to the candidates working or intended to work on Molecular Biology/ Microbial Genetics/Microbiology.

Hussain Munavar, Convener, UGC-NRCBS Winter School on "Mutagenesis, a powerful tool in Bacterial System", Head, Department of Molecular Biology, School of Biological Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai - 625021 on or before June 15th 2012.

Applications should be forwarded by their research supervisors/Head of the  Department or Head of the Institution. The candidates will be selected based on their qualifications and research interests.
