Ph.D. Programme in Computational Biology
The Institute of Mathematical Sciences announces a new Ph.D. programme in computational biology, starting in August 2013. This is a new initiative, the first of its kind in India, to train students from a variety of backgrounds in the mathematical and computational techniques required to do cutting-edge modern biology, and perform international-quality research in collaboration with leading biology groups in India and elsewhere.
The programme is under the Life Sciences board of the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), of which IMSc is a constituent institution. Before embarking on their research, students have three semesters of coursework, which consists of seven core courses, to be carried out at IMSc; elective courses, which may be taken at IMSc or at other institutions by mutual consent; and lab rotations, at collaborating labs in other institutions. The core coursework covers essentials of modern biology, essential techniques from physics, mathematics, statistics and computer science, physics of proteins and biomolecules, biological sequence analysis and algorithms, and systems biology. Elective coursework covers various topics in greater depth. Following the coursework and a comprehensive examination, students will embark on research leading to a Ph.D. degree awarded by HBNI.
Biology at IMSc
Currently, faculty members at IMSc work on biophyscs of biomolecules, active membranes, biomolecular transport, pattern formation, regulatory genomics, sequence alignment algorithms, systems biology, infectious disease modelling, cardiac arrhythmias, computational neuroscience, modelling of protein folding, protein-protein interactions, nature of hydrophobic force, and various other topics in computational and mathematical biology. We expect to expand into more areas in coming years. See here for more details.
Collaborating institutes
Scientists at various institutions around the country, including NCBS Bangalore, JNCASR Bangalore, CCMB Hyderabad, CDFD Hyderabad, TIFR Mumbai, IISER Pune, NCL Pune, and elsewhere have expressed interest in our programme and willingness to teach modules of our coursework and take students in lab rotations. Where feasible, students of our programme can also take courses at other institutions.
Prerequisites
We are looking for students with a masters degree in any field of science or engineering, who have strong mathematical skills and an interest in biology. Students should apply with the results of one or more of the following national tests:
JEST (physics, computer science)
NBHM (mathematics)
GATE (engineering)
NET (all sciences)
Holders of national fellowships such as CSIR-SRF, DST-INSPIRE etc may apply directly.
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed.
