About Conference : The fundamental purpose of this conference is to provide a forum for presentation and exchanges of current information with respect to the production, marketing, research of medicinal and aromatics plants. Hence this conference will focus on strengthening the existing research, information exchange and building on new ones addition to interactions among researchers, growers’ processors, industries and the public interest groups. In this context, the conservation of medicinal plants and the documents of traditional knowledge are important to curb their ruthless exploitation by illegal trade. Ultimately prospecting of biodiversity for efficient management should be judiciously put to the use of medicinal plants for the benefit of mankind.
Medicinal and Aromatic Plants have been a major source of health care since time immemorial. Plant parts, extracts and phytochemicals derived from medicinal plants are being used in different systems of medicine like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Homeopathy, Folklore and Allopathy. About 50% of prescription drugs are derived from medicinal plants. The pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries are currently engaged actively in Research and Development of ecofriendly phytochemicals as 70-80% of population of developing countries are relying on products which are of plant origin. These attributes clearly indicate the demanding position of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in the present market. Therefore this National Conference provides an opportunity to students and researchers to share their valuable ideas in the field of Natural products.
India has 15 Agroclimatic zones and 17000-18000 species of flowering plants of which 6000-7000 are estimated to have medicinal usage in folk and documented systems of medicine, like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy. About 960 species of medicinal plants are estimated to be in trade of which 178 species have annual consumption levels in excess of 100 metric tones.
Medicinal plants are not only a major resource base for the traditional medicine & herbal industry but also provide livelihood and health security to a large segment of Indian population. The domestic trade of the AYUSH industry is of the order of Rs. 80 to 90 billion. The Indian medicinal plants and their products also account of exports in the range of Rs. 10 billion.
There is global resurgence in traditional and alternative health care systems resulting in world herbal trade which stands at US$ 120 billion and is expected to reach US$ 7 trillion by 2050. Indian share in the world trade, at present, however, is quite low.
