FACULTY POSITIONS IN PEDIATRIC BIOLOGY, BIODESIGN, ECOLOGY, HUMAN IMMUNOLOGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASE AREAS
Recruitment Notice No. THS / RN / 1 /2013
Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) is an autonomous institution of the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, and is a part of the interdisciplinary Biotech Science Cluster at Faridabad in the National Capital Region. The institution is designed to be a dynamic and interactive enterprise with a mission to conduct innovative translational research and develop research collaborations across disciplines and professions to accelerate the extension of concepts to improve the human health. The cluster institutions will have access to state-of-the- art experimental animal facility, biosafety level 3 laboratories and technology platform resources.
THSTI is organized into several niche centres based on their research focus. Brief information on various programs within these centres is provided below.
Vaccine and Infectious Disease Research Center (VIDRC) has a mission to study infectious disease and pathogens and understand host - pathogen interactions at the molecular and cellular level with the aim to generate translational knowledge for developing prophylactic and therapeutic measures against diseases prevalent in India.
VIDRC research program is currently focused around viral pathogens such as Dengue, Japanese encephalitis, hepatitis E, and bacterial pathogen M. tuberculosis.
Additionally, VIDRC is involved with the clinical development of an oral rotavirus vaccine which is currently undergoing phase III trial.
Pediatric Biology Centre (PBC) has been set up with the purpose of bridging the gap between the clinical and population epidemiology and the more recent mechanistic biology with the ultimate mission of developing robust sustainable interventions for reducing neonatal & child morbidity & mortality.
The current research focus is on characterization of the new born & young infant immune system, development of tools for measuring human immune responses to infections and vaccines, understanding the biology of preterm birth and fetal growth and studying specific pediatric diseases to identify diagnostic and therapeutic targets.
Centre for Biodesign (CBD) will promote strategic basic research and an effective translational route of science into development of novel technology platforms, implants, devices, diagnostics and imaging. It will support a multidisciplinary approach of combining novel technological concepts and clinical expertise.
To strengthen its teaching and research program THSTI is looking for highly motivated individuals with expertise in the following domain areas:
Biology of diseases : Physcian scientists or biologists with strong interest in addressing hypothesis driven questionson biology of diseases that are within the mandate of THSTI.
Biodesign: Individuals with knowledge of development of novel implants, devices, diagnostics, drug and vaccine delivery systems or imaging tools. The candidate must have the capability of developing alliances with other medical, biological and engineering faculty to create novel medical technology for affordable health care.
Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases: Individuals with expertise in clinical epidemiology with interest in neonatal and child health or infectious diseases.
The incumbent will collaborate with biologists to help bridge the gap between clinical and population epidemiology and mechanistic biology.
Human immunology: Physcian scientists or biologists with a strong interest and commitment to studying human immune responses to infections and to study disease biomarkers and correlates of protective immunity.
The ideal candidate should have strong interest/experience of working with hypothesis driven science in the human immune system and /or with animal models of infectious diseases that will help in bridging the gap between basic research and clinical therapies.
Experimental Ecology: The candidate should have a sound biology background with specialization in the
field of population ecology or community ecology. The candidate should be able to perform large scale field work as well as some lab experiments. The candidate must have at least graduation level mathematics/ statistics background to handle the preliminary data.
Theoretical ecology: The candidate should have expertise in mathematical ecology especially on population dynamics and must have a strong background in applied mathematics/ statistics. S/he should be comfortable with data handling tools and mathematical models. The candidate is also expected to know computer simulation using software like Matlab and Maple, and should be able to use them in ecological problems like population ecology or community ecology.
Investigators will be provided shared laboratory space and adequate start-up resources. They are expected to eventually generate extramural project-based funding for their research programmes.
Interim THSTI laboratories are functioning from Gurgaon in the South of Delhi area with adequate housing, transportation and schooling facilities in the neighbourhood. The permanent laboratories of THSTI will come up at Faridabad over the next two years.
The faculty candidates must have a MD/PhD degree in a relevant area of life science
. For the infectious disease faculty position a medical degree (MBBS) will be an essential qualification.
For all positions post-doctoral experience as mentioned below with some indication of independent scientific thinking is a prerequisite. Demonstrated record of scientific output in the form of recent peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals of high international repute and/or internationally valid and productive patents is essential.
Appointments will be offered at the following levels depending on diversity of experience and the quality of scientific and related accomplishments.
