NIT ROURKELA Workshop on MICROBIAL DIVERSITY AND BIOREMEDIATION TECHNOLOGY (MIDBIT- 2013) | September 11-13, 2013

Workshop on MICROBIAL DIVERSITY AND BIOREMEDIATION TECHNOLOGY (MIDBIT- 2013)

September 11-13, 2013

Organized by

Department of Life Science

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

ROURKELA - 769008, ODISHA

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Microbes are one of the dominant life forms in the universe; however, most of us are unaware about their diversity and beneficial role. There are many shortcomings to study the microbial diversity like unavailability of the proper environmental conditions in the laboratory, absence of suitable nutrition medium etc. In this workshop the participants will be familiar with the hands on practices of many advanced techniques of both culture dependent and culture independent approaches of studying microbial diversity.

Due to rapid urbanization and emerging anthropogenic activities, the natural biodiversity of our environment is getting disturbed by xenobiotic compounds. In this regard, the workshop will be helpful for the participants to learn various techniques involved in studying microbial bioremediation through spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy and genetic approaches. Lectures comprising of the eminent academicians will be helpful for the participants for their further research works and career.

COURSE COMPONENTS

Following techniques will be demonstrated:

Module I: Culture dependent microbial diversity Genomic DNA isolation and amplification of 16S rRNA gene from bacteria. Agarose gel electrophoresis

Module II: Culture independent microbial diversity Designing of primers. Isolation and amplification of metagenomic DNA. Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE).

Module III: Sequence analysis and phylogeny Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences. Sequence submission to GenBank. Phylogenetic tree construction.

Module IV: Microbial bioremediation Isolation of mRNA and preparation of cDNA. Gene expression in qRT- PCR. Fluorescent microscopic image analysis of bacterial biofilm. Spectrophotometry and fermenter in biodegradation study.
