TRAINING PROGRAMME IN "NEXT GENERATION SEQUENCING (NGS) - BIOINFORMATICS AND DATA ANALYSIS"
17th - 21st, September, 2013 (5 DAYS)
Programme Conducted by:
AU-KBC Research Centre,
MIT Campus, Chromepet,
Chennai - 600 044.
PROGRAMME BACKGROUND The advent of Next generation Sequencing (NGS) is virtually changing Biology and Medicine. Since the first living organism was sequenced, now we have the full genomes of multiple humans, chimp, chicken, dog, yeast, thousands of bacteria, hundreds of viruses and the list goes on. The challenge has now shifted from sequencing to extracting knowledge from it.NGS technologies cover diverse application areas such as de novo sequencing, genome resequencing, exome sequencing, ChIP -sequencing,etc. Thanks to the rapid development in technology in recent years, thousands of genomes involving human DNA and RNA sequencing are underway in numerous countries.
Comparative analyses of human genome sequences, as well as other genomes form the basis to address questions such as: What specific markers make cancer cells resistant to specific drugs? What are the causes of antibiotic resistance in TB and other disease ? what portion of the genome is transcribed in a disease population vs normal populations?. Some of the major applications of NGS include Diagnostics, Drug discovery, Personalized medicine, Biomarker discovery, Agriculture and Animal research.
