In the beginning, Indian Council of Medical Research focused its research mandate in the areas like control of communicable diseases, fertility control, maternal and child health and control of nutritional disorder. Due its meticulous programme the average life expectancy in India is estimated to have gone up from 31 years at the time of independence to 65 years as on today’s WHO report. This is largely because of medical advancement in the field of diagnosis and subsequent treatment by effective drugs obtained because of drug discovery programme. With the increase in life expectancy, Indian Council of Medical Research apart from communicable diseases also included other research areas covering metabolic disorders such as diabetes, cardiovascular complications, inflammation, cancer and age related health complications like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson and so on. These health complications pose more challenges to the scientific communities in India and abroad.
Drug discovery is one of the most challenging and complex endeavors for academicians at Universities, Research Institutions and Pharma scientists. The best rational approach to achieve this complex drug discovery programme is through collaborative research between academic Universities, Research Institutions, pharmaceutical industries and government agencies. University of Mysore made a steady progress in identifying and characterizing new molecules of therapeutic importance. Recognizing the overall contributions made by University of Mysore, Ministry of Human Resource and Development, New Delhi, identified this University as Institution of Excellence and awarded rupees 100 crores. University Grant Commission, New Delhi, recently considered University of Mysore as University Potential for Excellence and awarded rupees 50 crores. Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, awarded rupees 7 crores under the programme Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence to boost our research activities. With all these recognitions University research activities is very vibrant and motivated to achieve excellence. This symposium on the theme “Chemical Biology – Drug discovery programme” will provide an excellent platform to interact with scientists from various research areas to come together in a collaborative effort to conquer health complications.
