Categories of PhD Students
The Institute admits PhD students under the following categories:
i) REGULAR
A student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD degree. He/she receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency.
ii) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
iii) SELF-FINANCED (FULL-TIME)
A student in this category works full-time towards the PhD Programme. He/She must have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field, with supporting document(s) of proof. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.
iv) PROJECT STAFF
This category refers to a student who is working on a sponsored project in the Institute and is admitted to the PhDProgramme to work on a full-time or part-time basis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his/her PhD Programme, his/her category will be converted to that of SELF-FINANCED unless he/she is granted an assistantship/fellowship from the Institute or any other agency. No Objection Certificate (Form II) must be attached with the application.
v) PART-TIME
A student in this category is a professionally employed person (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who pursues the PhDProgramme while continuing the duties of his/her service. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form III) must be enclosed at the time of application.
vi) EXTERNAL
This category refers to a student employed in an R&D organization/academic institution/industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the Department/Centre in which he/she is registered. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form IV) must be enclosed at the time of application.
Note: The word `Form’ used under this section refers to the forms as specified in the Application Form for Admission to
PhD Programme.
Eligibility Criteria for Admission into PhD Programme
Minimum CPI or Percentage of marks in the qualifying degree, with specific requirements for different streams, have been indicated below:
Note: (a) For eligibility for financial assistance for regular category candidates, please see the section “Financial Support” below.
(b) Minimum experience required for Sponsored (Full-time), Self-Financed, Part-Time, and External categories of candidates, have also been indicated below.
PhD in Engineering
For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
i) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences/Veterinary Sciences/Pharmacy in a relevant
area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
iii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions [ Details of the Institutions can be seen fromhttp://mhrd.gov.in/funded_technical_inst_hindi ]
iv) A candidate having a Two-year Master's degree (after completion of 4-year Bachelor's degree) or three-year Master's degree (after completion of 3-year Bachelor's degree) in Engineering/ Technology/Science in a relevant area with minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks,
Or
A candidate with a Two-year MSc degree (after completion of 3-year Bachelor's degree) in a relevant area with minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks,
is also considered for admission in the Department of Biotechnology.
v) A candidate having a Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/ Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks, is also considered for admission in the Department of Biotechnology.
vi) A candidate having MSc degree with Mathematics as a subject at bachelor’s level is also considered for
admission in the Department of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70% marks in Master’s level with consistent first class at other levels.
vii) A candidate having a Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area, with a Postgraduate Degree in Management Science(Finance) or MBA with Finance specialization or equivalent, is also considered for admission in the area of specialization `Construction Management’, of theDepartment of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of 6.5 CPI or 60% marks in Bachelor's level and 6.5 CPI or 60% marks in the postgraduate degree.
viii) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MTech studies and having a minimum CPI of
8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the
beginning of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.
ix) A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her BTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual BTech and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree.
PhD in Design
For admission to the PhD Programme in Design, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
i) Candidates having MArch/MDes degree or MTech/ME degree in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Master’s degree in Applied Arts/Ergonomics/Fine Arts/Psychology/Physiology/Occupational Safety and Health/ Journalism/ Mass Media Communication with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
iii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Design or Engineering/Technology or Five-year BArch degree or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
iv) Four-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Design or Engineering/Technology or Five-year BArch degree or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions [ Details of the Institutions can be seen from http://mhrd.gov.in/funded_technical_inst_hindi ]
v) A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT or equivalent) with first class at Bachelor’s level.
vi) BFA (4-year professional programme, after 10+2)/GD Art (5-year programme after 10th standard) with one
year professional experience, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
vii) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.
viii) A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her BDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual BDes and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree.
PhD in Science
For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following
criteria:
i) Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of
marks.
iii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design/Science from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)/Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in a related area in Engineering/Technology/Design/Science (from other than IITs/IISc) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences
For admission to the PhD Programme in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
i) Master’s degree in Arts/Commerce/Science in a relevant area with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.
ii) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60%
marks.
iii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
iv) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design or equivalent (from other than IITs) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks.
PhD in Centres
i) Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology/Design/Architecture/Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a
minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
ii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
iii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions [ Details of the Institutions can be seen fromhttp://mhrd.gov.in/funded_technical_inst_hindi
iv) Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
v) Master’s degree in Social Sciences, in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks, is also
considered for admission to the Centre for the Environment.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE FOR SPONSORED, SELF-FINANCED, PART-TIME AND EXTERNAL CATEGORIES OF APPLICANTS FOR PHD PROGRAMME
1. Candidate in Sponsored, Part-time and External categories must be a regular employee of the sponsoring
organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.
2. Candidates in Self-financed category should have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS FOR CANDIDATES STILL TO APPEAR IN QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS
Candidates still to appear in their qualifying degree examinations may also apply, provided they appear in all their qualifying degree examinations and complete all requirements for their degrees before 15-07-2014. If selected, such candidates shall be admitted provisionally, and they will have to furnish the results of their qualifying degree examinations latest by 25-08-2014. Further, they must fulfill the minimum requirements of marks/CPI, and other conditions like valid GATE score/CEED score/NET or INSPIRE certificate (as may be applicable) etc., as mentioned under eligibility criteria for respectiveprogrammes. Failure to fulfill any of these requirements, shall automatically result in cancellation of admission.
Relaxation for SC/ST/PD Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PD applicants.
Seats are reserved for SC, ST, OBC(Non-creamy layer) and PD categories.
OBC(Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per format indicated below. The OBC(NCL) Certificate, issued by competent authority, on or after 01-06-2013, shall only be acceptable.
Financial Support
(For regular students, who are Indian nationals)
1. Institute assistantships will be available to eligible PhD students as per prevailing (MHRD, GOI) norms, as applicable from time to time. The present rates of assistantships are as below:

1st & 2nd Year : Rs.16,000/- p.m.
3rd to 5th Year : Rs.18,000/- p.m.
ME/MTech or equivalent
1st & 2nd Year : Rs.18,000/- p.m.
3rd & 4th Year # : Rs.20,000/- p.m.
Note:# No assistantship will be available beyond 4th year for this category of students.
2. Assistantships from external funding organizations will be available as per terms and conditions of the concerned funding organizations.
In case a Waiting List is recommended for PhD admission by an academic Department/Centre, a few candidates placed in the concerned Waiting List (in merit order) with valid CSIR-UGC NET JRF certificate only, may be provided admission offer subject to the condition that they will receive financial assistance only and only after actual receipt of fund from the CSIR/UGC and they will not be provided any financial credit support from the Institute.
This facility shall not be available for Waiting List candidates with valid GATE/CEED certificates since assistantships in such cases are to be from Institute fund; and therefore, subject to vacancy in the main list only, such candidates may expect admission in merit order of the Waiting List.
3. Students receiving assistantships from the Institute or fellowships from any other funding agencies, are required to perform academic duties as per prevailing norms.
4. The continuation of the assistantship/fellowship is subject to satisfactory performance of the assigned duties and satisfactory progress of the student in the PhD Programme.
For appearing in the PhD interview under regular category of candidates, to-and-fro sleeper class railway fare or equivalent will be paid by the shortest route from the communication address to the Institute.
First Step
Please get a print-out of the `Guideline for Filling-up Online PhD Application Form’, byvisiting the concerned website given below.
Second Step
For filling-up Online Application Form, first of all, please keep ready with you the following documents (including scanned soft copies of some of the documents, as specified below, to be available in your computer or CD or Pen Drive for direct uploading). Otherwise, you may have difficulty in completing on-line submission of your application form.
(i) A SCANNED SOFT COPY of your recent coloured photograph of size more than 15 KB but less than 80 KB (4.5 cm. x 3.5 cm.) with file type jpeg or jpg or gif only, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form. Please note that uploading of your colouredphotograph is mandatory.
IF A SCANNED COPY OF YOUR COLOURED PHOTOGRAPH IS NOT UPLOADED, YOUR ON-LINE APPLICATION MAY BE REJECTED.
(ii) A copy of your Date of Birth(DoB) Certificate (this will be required, if DoB is not mentioned in your Class X/XII Pass Certificate/Mark Sheet);
(iii) If applicable, A SCANNED SOFT COPY [ IN PDF FORMAT ONLY ] of your Caste Certificate [including OBC(NCL) Certificate as per format prescribed below)], for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form. Please note that OBC(NCL) certificate should be issued by the competent authority on or after 01-06-2013.
ALSO PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU APPLY AS SC/ST/OBC(NCL) CANDIDATE, BUT DO NOT UPLOAD A SCANNED COPY OF THE APPROPRIATE CASTE CERTIFICATE, YOUR CLAIM FOR CONSIDERATION UNDER RESERVATION CATEGORY MAY BE REJECTED; AND YOU MAY BE CONSIDERED UNDER GENERAL CATEGORY.
(iv) If applicable, attested copy of your `PD’ Certificate.
(v) If applicable, the appropriate Form in original relating to candidate’s Category [ i.e.Sponsored (Full-Time)/ IITG’s Project Staff/ Part-Time/ External (Sponsored) etc.] - as per format prescribed below.
(vi) SCANNED SOFT COPIES [ IN PDF FORMATS ONLY ] of (a) Pass Certificate(Original/Provisional) and (b) Consolidated Mark Sheet of the Qualifying Degree, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form.
If you are not in a position to upload scanned copy of your qualifying degree pass certificate due to reasons beyond your control, if called for Written Test and/or Interview, you will be allowed to personally submit the same in the concerned Department/Centre on the day of Written Test and/or Interview.
BUT, IF YOU HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED YOUR QUALIFYING DEGREE PROGRAMME, AND DO NOT UPLOAD SCANNED COPY OF THE CONSOLIDATED MARK SHEET, YOUR ON-LINE APPLICATION MAY BE REJECTED.
THOSE APPEARING IN THEIR FINAL EXAMINATION will need to scan and uploadonly the Mark Sheet of previous semester/year of the Qualifying Degree; and this isMANDATORY.
Please note that, if called for Written Test and/or Interview, the candidate will have to produce the Originals as well as Attested copies of all the documents relating to educational qualifications (from Class X onwards). This is also applicable for the result awaited candidates, except that along with other required documents they will produce Original as well as attested copies of all Mark Sheets up to the previous semester/year of the Qualifying Degree.

(ix) Demand Draft : Demand Draft is NOT REQUIRED now. It will be required for a candidateonly and only if he/she is called to appear in Written Test and/or Interview.
In other words, if a candidate is shortlisted and called** to appear in Written Test and/or Interview, only then he/she will be required to arrange a Demand Draft for Rs.150/- (Rs.75/- for SC/ST/PD candidates), from any nationalized bank, in favour of INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY GUWAHATI, payable at Guwahati.
Note: * If you are yet to receive the original GATE/CEED/NET/INSPIRE Score Card/ Certificate, at least get the downloaded version of the same from the concerned website.
** Instead of waiting to receive the call letter, you may keep on visiting and seeing updates in the website of the department/centre in which you are applying for admission.

Third Step

(ii) fill-up the Online Application Form [by going through the `Guideline for Filling-up Online PhD Application Form’ ] and submit ( i.e. execution of `Final Submit’ function);
(iii) Upload your photo and other relevant documents as explained at points (i), (iii) and (vi) under Second Step above.
YOU CAN UPLOAD THESE DOCUMENTS ONLY AFTER SUCCESSFUL SUBMISSION OF ONLINE APPLICATION FORM [i.e. only after (not before or simultaneously) successful execution of `Final Submit’ function).
YOU ARE AGAIN REMINDED THAT UPLOADING OF DOCUMENTS AS STATED AGAINST POINTS (i), (iii) AND (vi) UNDER SECOND STEP ABOVE, AREMANDATORY. IF YOU DO NOT COMPLY TO THIS REQUIREMENT, YOUR APPLICATION MAY BE REJECTED.
Fourth Step
Please:
(a) take a print-out of your filled-up Online Application Form; and
(b) also keep a copy of your Filled-up Online Application Form saved in your computer or a CD or a Pen Drive (if the computer does not belong to you) for your future reference.
Fifth Step
After getting the print-out of your Online Application Form, you may put your signature with date on the print-out of your filled-up Online Application Form.

Selection
The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test and/or interview/portfolio review, if required, based on performance in GATE/NET/CEED/INSPIRE, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc.
Legal Jurisdiction
The Courts at Guwahati alone shall have the jurisdiction to settle and decide all matters and disputes related to the above referred admission process, as IIT Guwahati is the organizing Institute.
