The Centre for Neuroscience at the Indian Institute of Science seeks to recruit personnel for the following positions under a program grant entitled “Alzheimer’s Disease: Understanding mechanisms for early diagnosis and treatment” funded by the Tata Trusts for a period of 5 years.

Post No. 1: Research Faculty (Rs. 100,000/- per month consolidated)

(A) ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATION: PhD in relevant area with an excellent academic record and minimum 3 years of postdoctoral research experience with high quality publications. Candidate is expected to be actively engaged in experimental work.

Job Description: To conduct experiments in the laboratory towards understanding the molecular and cellular origins of Alzheimer’s disease.

Desirable: Previous experience in working with animal models/primary cell culture/microscopy/genomics and proteomics.

(B) ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATION: PhD in mathematics, neuroscience or engineering with post-doctoral experience.

Job Description: Analysis of fMRI data.

Desirable: Familiarity with fMRI data (including pre-processing and post-processing of
such data) and Matlab. Should have interest in developing new mathematical/computational models to analyze fMRI and other data.

Post No. 2: Senior Research Associate (Rs. 70,000/- per month consolidated).

Essential Qualifications: PhD in relevant area with excellent academic record and with minimum 3 years of research experience.

Job Description: To study the underlying pathophysiology of Alzheimer disease using mouse models and primary neuronal culture systems.

Desirable: Experience in animal handling/mammalian tissue culture/stem cell culture/functional and biochemical characterization of proteins and signaling pathways/microscopy are desirable.

Post No. 3: Junior Research Associate (Rs. 50,000/- per month consolidated).

(A)Essential Qualifications: Recent PhD in relevant area with excellent academic record.

Job Description: To study the underlying pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease using mouse models and primary neuronal culture systems.

Desirable: Experience in animal handling/mammalian tissue culture/stem cell culture/functional and biochemical characterization of proteins and signaling pathways/microscopy are desirable.

(B) Essential Qualifications: PhD in mathematics, neuroscience or engineering.

Job Description: Will be required to perform data analysis using Matlab and other standard programming language.Desirable: Familiarity with signal processing and differential equations would be desirable.

Post No. 4: Senior Research Interns (Rs. 35,000/- per month consolidated).

(A) Essential Qualifications: Masters’ degree in a relevant area with minimum 2 years research experience.

Job Description: Assist in laboratory experiments pertaining to pathophysiology of Alzheimer disease using mouse models and primary culture systems.

Desirable: Experience with animal cell culture, PCR, basic biochemical and molecular
biology techniques and animal handling.

(B) Essential Qualifications: B.Tech in engineering or biology with at least 2 years experience working in a research laboratory and knowledge of basic computer programming

Job Description: To conduct and analyse experiments involving characterization of Alzheimer’s disease using psychophysical techniques.

Desirable: Experience in behavioural testing is desirable.

Post No. 5: Junior Research Interns (Rs. 20,000/- per month consolidated).

(A) Essential Qualifications: Masters’ degree in a relevant area. Job Description: Assist in laboratory experiments pertaining to pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease using mouse models and primary culture systems.

Desirable: Experience with animal cell culture, PCR, basic biochemical and molecular biology techniques and animal handling.

(B) Essential Qualifications: B.Tech degree in a relevant field.

Job Description: To conduct and analyse experiments involving characterization of Alzheimer’s disease using psychophysical techniques.

Desirable: Exposure to clinical work is desirable.

(C) Essential Qualifications: B. Tech/M. Tech in Engineering, preferably Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or Computer Science; or M. Sc. or equivalent in any branch of Biology, preferably related to Neuroscience; or M.B.B.S or M.V.Sc.

Job Description: The project involves neurophysiological recordings from animals as well as EEG recordings from animals and humans. Applicants should either have experience with neurophysiological techniques or EEG to help with the recordings, or have strong background in programming and signal processing to help with the analysis. Programming experience in Matlab is preferred.

Desirable: Previous experience in this area of research.

Post No. 6: Senior Technician (Rs. 40,000/- per month consolidated).

(A) Essential Qualifications: Bachelors’ degree in relevant area with minimum 5 years experience working in a research laboratory.

Job Description: To ensure smooth running of core facilities.

Desirable: Experience with cryostat, vibrotome/microtome, paraffin embedding, basic histology stains and managing histology core facility/experience with fluorescence and confocal microscopy, live cell imaging, training microscope users and managing microscope core facility.(B) Essential Qualifications: B.Tech in engineering with at least 3 years’ experience in software/computer applications and programming languages.

Job Description: To conduct and analyse experiments involving characterization of Alzheimer’s disease using psychophysical techniques.

Desirable: Prior experience with behavioural testing and psychophysics and/or computer programming is desirable. Familiarity with JAVA/C and HTML programming
preferred.

Post No. 7: Junior Technician (Rs. 25,000/- per month consolidated).

Essential Qualifications: Bachelors’ degree in relevant area with minimum 3 years experience working in a research laboratory.

Job Description: To ensure smooth running of core facilities.

Desirable:
i) Experience with cryostat, microtome, paraffin embedding, basic histology stains
for histology
ii) Experience in fluorescence/confocal microsopy and live cell imaging.
iii) Experience in PCR including qRT-PCR, cloning, immunoblotting, 2D SDS PAGE, isoelectric focusing and general molecular biology techniques.

Post No. 8: Facility Manager (Rs. 50,000/- per month consolidated).

Essential Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in any field with minimum 5 years experience in managing a facility in R&D.

Job Description: Responsible for equipment maintenance including generator and UPS at CNS. Coordinate training of personnel for use of equipments and ensure compliance of standard operating procedures and safety measures. Should minimize downtime of equipment by ensuring prompt repair and following effective preventive maintenance schedules.

Desirable: Excellent organizational and management skills and an ability to develop  working relationships with a wide range of people. Good spoken and written skills.

Post No. 9: Veterinarian (Rs. 50,000/- per month consolidated).

Essential Qualifications: Master’s in Veterinary Science (MVSc) with minimum 2 years experience or Bachelor in Veterinary Science (BVSc) with minimum 5 years of experience working in a small animal research facility.

Job Description: Will be in-charge of research animals in small rodent behavioural facility. Should be committed to high quality maintenance of research animals and provide care for mice and rats including preventive and general health surveillance.

Should be able to administer medication for treatment and collect biological samples for testing. Must manage animal experimental protocols and assist in animal experimentation, train technical staff and ensure strict compliance with institutional animal care committee guidelines. Must implement and control procedures related to quarantine and maintenance including breeding of research animals.

Desirable: Experience with maintenance and breeding transgenic and knockout mice and genotyping.

General Conditions:

1. All appointments are contractual and valid for 5 years. Candidates will be evaluated on a yearly basis prior to renewal.

4. Candidates applying for posts 2 &3; 4&5 and 6&7 may be placed in commensurate with their experience.
5. Merely fulfilling the minimum prescribed qualifications and experience will not vest any right on a candidate for being called for interview. Since it may not be possible to call all the candidates for interview, the applications will be shortlisted and the decision of the duly constituted Screening Committee will be final.
