Gujarat Ayurved University located in Jamnagar city, situated on the western part of Gujarat state is a unique and the only statutory University of its kind. It offers advanced courses on all aspects of Ayurveda. Taking into consideration the rapid increase of worldwide interest and demand for the plant based drugs in the last few decades leading to large scale commercial production of both classical and proprietary herbal formulations in the country, it has introduced several courses designed in the context of the present situation, covering different aspects of Ayurveda and allied traditional systems of medicine. Introduction of these multidisciplinary courses in the present times is considered most opportune, since the global demand for herbal preparations is growing in an exponential manner. India is a rich treasure of medicinal plants and can become the main source for supply of herbal drugs to the whole world but lack of or inadequate quality standards of raw material has been one of the major impediments in wider acceptance of herbal drugs. Various international agencies like World Health Organization have been emphasizing on the importance and need of standardization of herbal raw material.

Skilled technical man power possessing the knowledge on all aspects of medicinal plants are needed for this.

Sensing its urgency, an effort was put forth by establishing a self finance institute for awarding M.Sc. Degree in Medicinal Plant Science & M. Pharm (Ayu.) by Gujarat Ayurved University in the year 1999-2000 which has been merged in the year 2006 with Dravayaguna department of Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda providing all the laboratory facilities and infrastructure for the betterment of the course. Some of our alumni’s have joined research institutes as research Associates, while many others have joined reputed Industries of India. It is gratified to note that the course has been recognized various, well-known government organizations like ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) CCRAS (Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha) etc.

1. Master degree in Medicinal Plant Sciences.
2. Master degree in Pharmacy (Ayu.)

Aims & Objects

1) To adopt multidisciplinary approach for comprehensive teaching of all aspects related to medicinal plants.
2) To generate skilled manpower to meet the present and future requirement of human resources in the field of medicinal plant resources development.
3) To provide distinctive education and training on all aspects of medicinal plants.

Duration : 2 years

Eligibility :

a) Qualification : Graduate in any of the following disciplines

Botany, Pharmacy, Agriculture or Ayurveda.

b) Age : Minimum 20 years.

Starting of Session : July, each year.

Number of Seats : 15 (Few seats are reserved for  Foreign students).

Medium of teaching : English

Course Contents (Brief outlines):

The course has been divided into 3 parts.

a) Medico-Botanical Sciences,
b) Agricultural Sciences,
c) Pharmaceutical Sciences, Including material, Personnel and resources management.
Medico-Botanical Sciences

a) Introduction to medicinal plants.
b) Morphological Studies of the plants.
c) Areas of occurrence and ecological studies.
d) Important identifying characters.
e) Useful parts and their specific characters, properties and uses. Season & method of collection of different parts viz. root, stem, bark, leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds and exudates.

Agricultural Sciences

a) Area, Land and Topography.
b) Soil Conditions.
c) Preparation of the land for cultivation.
d) Nursery.
e) Sowing, Germination and Transplanting.
f) Irrigation.
g) Use of fertilizers and manures.
h) Care from fungi, pests, etc.
i) Weeding and harvesting.

Pharmaceutical Sciences

a) Macro/Microscopic, chemical, Pharmacognostical and pharmacological studies of the crude drugs (Both modern & Ayurvedic aspects).
b) Material, personnel and recourses management aspects related to medicinal plant resources development. 

Mode of Examination : Annual, at the end of each academic year.

Fee : Rs. 40000 per annum in 4 installments for Indian Students and 200 US $ per month for foreigners.40% concession in Tuition fee and registration fee for candidates from SAARC countries and NRI sponsored candidates.

Application fee : Rs. 1000 (20 US$ for foreign students)

Lodging : Foreign Students will be provided accommodation in International Scholars Hostel. At present there is no hostel facility for candidates from India.

2. Master degree in Pharmacy (Ayurveda) - M.Pharm (Ayu.)

This is a master Degree course to provide in depth knowledge of Ayurvedic drugs, their method of manufacturing and also their standardization and quality control aspects.

There will be specialization in following subjects:

a) Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics (Rasa shastra and Bhaishjya kalapna)
b) Ayurvedic Plant Sciences (Dravyaguna Vigyan)
c) Pharmaceutical Analysis Standardization of Ayurvedic Drugs.
d) Pharmacology & Toxicology of Ayurvedic Drugs.
e) Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry of Ayurvedic Drugs.
The course comprises of both theoretical and practical traning.
Duration : 2 years

a) Qualification : B.Pharm (Ayu.) / B.Pharm (Modern) Degree.
b) Age : Minimum 20 years.
Starting of Session : July, each year.

Fee : Rs. 50000 per annum in 4 installments for Indian Students and 200
US $ per month for foreigners.40% concession in Tuition fee and

General Information

Application: Eligible candidates may apply by giving the detailed bio-data in specific format attached to this brochure. Please attach the English translation of attested copies of certificates. The filled application may be submitted along with the application fee of Rs. 1000 (US$ 20 for foreign students) by a Demand Draft/Bank Payment Order drawn in favor of The Director, IPGT & RA.

Foreigners have to complete all passport and visa requirements. Please proceed to India only after getting admission letter from this University and subsequently obtaining study Visa. The University will not take any responsibility in this regard.

Admission Criteria : Academic record and interview for B & C.

Venue : All the courses will be conducted in the campus of Gujarat Ayurved University,  Jamnagar.

Lodging : Students will have to arrange their own accommodation, however, on behalf of
the students, University may arrange private accommodation, but the students will have to bear the expenses which will be around Rupees 1000/- per month.

Boarding : Students have to manage their own food.

Registration Fee : Rs. 1000 for Indian students

US $ 100(for foreign students)
Hostel Fee : 50 US $ per month (International Hostel)

one spouse may be allowed in the room on extra payment of 25 US $ per month. (For foreign students only)

20 US $ per month (P.G. Boys Hostel - single seated).

Examination Fee : Rs. 1000 for each examination (For Indian students).

US $ 50 for each examination (For Foreign students).

All payments should be made by Demand Draft /Bank Payment Order drawn in favor of DIRECTOR I. P. G. T. & R. A. Gujarat Ayurved University

For foreign students, except from Nepal, all payments should be made only in American Dollars by Demand Draft/Bank payment order. No cash will be accepted. Our bankers are Bank of India, Hospital Road Branch, and Jamnagar, India.
