University Reading UK International PhD Scholarships 2015 in Life Sciences

The University is pleased to announce seven PhD studentships available for October 2015 start. These are available for highly qualified applicants for research within the Faculties of Science, Life Sciences and Arts, Humanities and Social Science.

What is available?

One full 'prize' studentship offering:

    • a subsistence grant (stipend) to match the UK Research Council rate
    • tuition fees at the International rate
    • a £1,000 p.a. training and development allowance

Six fees-only studentships, each one offering:

  • tuition fees at the International rate
  • a £1,000 p.a. training and development allowance

All awards are for up to three years in duration.

Research themes

The full 'prize' studentship is available for research in any area within the Faculties listed above.

The six fees-only studentships can only be awarded to those applicants whose proposed research falls within one of the following themes:

  • Climate and environmental change
  • Agriculture and food security
  • Health and well-being
  • Prosperity and resilience
  • Heritage, creativity and values

Please note that these themes are intended to be broadly interpreted across subject areas.

Eligibility Funding is only open to international (non-EU) candidates.

Deadline The deadline for applications is Friday 30th January 2015

How to Apply

  1. As a first step, you will need to submit an application for admission to a PhD in your chosen subject via our online admissions portal
  2. In the 'Scholarships applied for' box which appears within the Funding Section of your on-line application, you must quote 'International Research Studentship Competition' in order for your application to be considered in this competition.
  3. Upload a summary of your proposed research and any relevant skills or experience. Your research proposal should indicate which of the research themes listed above it relates to, justifying the fit of the research to this theme. If you only wish to be considered for the full studentship, selection of a theme is not obligatory but you will increase your chances of being awarded funding if your research can be considered for both a full 'prize' studentship and a fees-only studentship. The research proposal should be a maximum length of 500 words excluding references. The research proposal is an important element of the funding decision; you may wish to consult the Graduate School's guidance on writing a research proposal and/or your proposed supervisor.

Note for candidates who applied for admission prior to this guidance

If you have already applied for admission via the online admissions portal but were - at that time - unaware of the possibility of applying for these studentships, you should email Postgraduate Admissions (pgadmissions@reading.ac.uk) by the deadline listed above, indicating that you would like to be considered for the 'International Research Studentship Competition'.

Results

Successful candidates will notified via a formal studentship award letter by 1st May 2015. Please note that this is provided separately from any Offer of Admission and will be subject to standard checks for eligibility and other criteria.

We regret that, due to the very high volume of applications, we cannot undertake to contact all unsuccessful candidates; if you have not received a formal studentship funding offer by 1st May 2015 this will indicate that you have not been successful in this competition.

Where a candidate is successful in being awarded funding, this will be confirmed via a formal studentship award letter which is provided separately from any Offer of Admission and will be subject to standard checks for eligibility and other criteria.

Application Deadline 30th January 2015
