6 PhD scholarships of the Joachim Herz Foundation for scientists in the research fields:

The Joachim Herz scholarships provide doctoral candidates with outstanding conditions in which to conduct scientific research. The scholarships ensure doctoral candidates considerable financial leeway and consist of the following elements:

• Basic allowance: EUR 1,800 (monthly for 3 years)
• Equipment and language courses: EUR 5,000 (if required)
• Allowance to enable the recipient to take part in international conferences and research semesters and conduct work in research labs: EUR 9,000 (for three years)

• Allowance to organize a joint event in cooperation with other fellowship recipients of the Joachim Herz Foundation in the second or third year of their doctoral studies: up to a total EUR 12,000

• If applicable: supplements for children


Prerequisites for application:

• Outstanding master’s degree in physics, chemistry, biology, other science subjects, or in mathematics or medicine.
• Social involvement.

• We also welcome applications from students who are currently nearing the completion of their studies and expect to complete these with very good results.
• Note: Students who have already started a PhD project after 1 June 2014 may also apply. Please upload a written confirmation from your supervisor.


Application process and documents:

• Applications are accepted online only within the application deadline. Application can be donwnloaded here.
• The complete documentation must be uploaded in a single process. It is not possible to log on to the application screen and submit further documents or data at a later time. In exceptional cases, the missing documents can be submitted by e-mail. The prerequisite is to send an e-mail to graduateschool@pier-campus.de immediately after submitting the application via the online application form. You have to justify the delay and the expected date by which the missing document will be handed in.
• Please ask your referees if you may enter their names and e-mail addresses in the application form before you submit your application. Your referees and yourself will receive an automatic confirmation of receipt by e-mail once the assessment(s) has/have been received.
• You will receive an automatic confirmation of receipt by e-mail after submitting your application to the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School.
• Applications must be complete and submitted by the application deadline in order to be taken into consideration. Every applicant has to make sure that all of the documents are submitted by the deadline.


Please upload the following documents as PDF-files:

Certificate of master’s degree or diploma certificate and proof of the assigned modules / courses (transcript of records)
- The master’s certificate or diploma should state the Grade Point Average (GPA) corresponding to the Anglo-American grading system (not necessary for applicants with a German master’s degree).

- Master students currently nearing the completion of their studies who have not received a certificate yet: Please upload a forecast of your expected final grades (in addition to the transcript of records).

Curriculum vitae
Statement of purpose* (SoP) should include on max. 3 pages (in English):
- Your own research interests and experiences, as far as possible in view of the planned PhD. (How far you are engaged in the research field/s in which you would like to do your PhD. The selection committee seeks young scientists, who have already shown outstanding achievements during their studies and great interest in one or more research themes.)
- Why you want to do a doctorate within the framework of PIER and the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School. (In what ways you can benefit from a PhD within the framework of PIER and the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School.)
- Your social commitment. (In what social areas you have contributed or are currently involved in. The selection committee is looking for fellows who are also engaged beyond the course of study.)
The statement of purpose is a very important part of the application documents.

Two reference letters (in English)

- The reference letters must be submitted by the referees to graduateschool@pier-campus.de

Should you already have a verbal or written offer of supervision from a scientist at DESY or Universität Hamburg, please upload a brief statement by your future supervisor (in English).
Publication list (if already available).
If you have already begun your PhD: Please submit written proof from your supervisor that the doctoral studies have commenced after 1 June 2014 and name the topic of your thesis.
Personal interviews will take place in Hamburg on 26 and 27 May 2015. The PIER Helmholtz Graduate School (PHGS) covers the travel expenditure if applied for. Accommodation will be organized and financially covered by the PHGS.

Timeframe for the selection process:

1 October – 1 December 2014: Application period via the online portal of the PHGS
Middle of February 2015: Announcement of decision of the pre-selection
26 and 27 May 2015: Interviews in Hamburg
Early June: Announcement of the scholarship decisions
From June/July 2015 until early 2016: Start of doctoral studies
The date for the award ceremony for the scholarships will be announced due course.

Important framework for future fellows
The fellows of the Joachim Herz Foundation:
- receive a scholarship contract for 3 years by the Joachim Herz Foundation
- enrol as a doctoral student at the Universität Hamburg
- do a PhD in a research group within DESY, Universität Hamburg or institutions cooperating with PIER
- become a full member in the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School
- complete the training programme of the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School and obtain a certificate & a transcript of record of the PHGS in addition to the PhD certificate
- take part in events organized by the Joachim Herz Foundation
