“A ONE DAY Workshop on METHODS AND MECHANISMs OF HUMAN Cytogenetics”
May 18th, 2015
Organized by
Department of Genetic Engineering,
SRM University
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: The main goal of the workshop is to familiarize the participants with the cytogenetic techniques.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM: The workshop involves lectures and hands on training sessions about various cytogenetic parameters. Chromosome mutations and related events are the cause of many human genetic diseases and there is substantial evidence that chromosome mutations and related events causing alterations in oncogenes and tumour suppressor genes are involved in cancer in humans and experimental systems. The human chromosome analysis is a key tool for research and progress in clinical management of human genetic diseases including cancer, mainly leukaemia. With the advent of molecular cytogenetics and DNA based techniques, the conventional method of chromosome analysis is thought to be on way to extinction, however, till today, the human chromosome preparation and GTG-banded karyotyping has evolved to Molecular Karyotyping but, is not replaced. Majority of the students are not aware about cytogenetic methods.

Therefore it will help them to experience hands-on practical training,

OUTLINE OF THE CONTENTS:

i. Hands-on experiment will be done by the participants to obtain metaphase chromosomes using bone marrow cells of Swiss albino mice.
ii. Experiment will be done by the participants to obtain metaphase chromosomes using short term cultures of peripheral blood lymphocytes of healthy human beings. Mitogen stimulated blood culture, harvesting, slide preparation, staining, and microscopy will be performed. Methods and mechanisms will be explained with current updates on applied aspects of the field of conventional cytogenetics.
iii. Chorio allantoic membrane assay in chick embryo
