About the project: Gujarat has one of the most extended coastal ecosystems of India with a coastline of 1653 km. The coastal habitats of Gujarat vary from marine sediments surface waters, salty soils and salt pans which are both pristine and heavily polluted. Anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria (APB), a physiological group is interspersed with many chemotrophs. They possess bacteriochlorophyll and carry out anoxygenic photosynthesis. The present project aims at systematic extensive survey on the diversity of different phylogenetic lineages of anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria after culturing and also from the metagenome. Genetic diversity studies involve isolation of metagenome from the samples, amplification of 16S rRNA gene/pufL, pufL, M/fmo genes etc. and bioinformatic analysis. The work on cultured diversity involves selective enrichment, purification, identification and polyphasic characterization for description of novel taxa. The research work involves an inter-disciplinary approach involving microbiology and bioinformatics which helps the candidate to be trained in the upcoming areas of metagenomics/bacterial diversity/ecology. Selected candidates are expected to register for Ph.D.
