Doctoral Research Facility in Ocean Sciences

CSIR-NIO: The National Institute of Oceanography, a constituent research institute of CSIR under the Ministry of Science & Technology (Government of India), is amongst the foremost oceanographic research establishment in the world. The institute conducts research and imparts training in biology, chemistry, geology/geophysics, physics, marine instrumentation, ocean engineering, marine archaeology and interdisciplinary earth system science. The institute has well equipped laboratories and modern infrastructural facilities at its headquarter in Goa and regional centers in Mumbai, Kochi, Visakhapatnam. CSIR-NIO has two research vessels- R.V Sindhu Sankalp and R.V Sindhu Sadhana and has on its staff some top oceanographers as research supervisors. The institute presents an invigorating and enabling research environment to explore the unknown 2/3rd of the Earth, while focusing on excellence in terms of patent, high impact publications, awards and by making the knowledge useful for the society.

PROGRAMS: With the aim to produce human capital of highest standard in ocean sciences, the CSIR-NIO conducts two doctoral programs through AcSIR (Academy of Scientific & Innovative Research) and DRF (Doctoral Reserach Facility). While the PhD degree for the former is awarded by AcSIR (for details see www.acsir.res.in), the degrees for the latter are awarded by universities in India especially identified for the purpose by CSIR-NIO. For both the group of researchers, CSIR-NIO makes available its research and residential facilities.

SPECIALIZATIONS: The broad areas of doctoral research offered by CSIR-NIO include Marine Biology (biogeography, ecophysiology, functional processes and biodiversity of marine biota (viruses, bacteria, fungi, yeasts, phytoplankton, zooplankton, taxonomy, seaweeds and mangroves), food web dynamics, benthos, ecotoxicology, bioinvasion biofouling, marine biotechnology and molecular biology), Marine Chemistry (pollution, eco-toxicology,drugs from the sea, aquatic biogeochemistry), Marine Geology and Geophysics (micropaleontology, sedimentology, paleoceanography, placer & deep sea minerals, gas hydrate, ocean tectonics, crust-mantle dynamics, volcanism, plate boundary geometry), Physical Oceanography (air-sea interactions, coastal processes, ocean circulation, water-mass, upwelling, meso-scale eddies, waves, tides, climate, sea level rise), Marine Instrumentation (instrumentation, autonomous underwater vehicle), Ocean Engineering (near shore dynamics, coastal & offshore structures, coastal zone management, RS-GIS), and Marine Archaeology (shipwrecks, heritage). In addition, doctoral topics could be identified on any interdisciplinary activities to understand the Earth System Science as a whole. Depending on research topics and areas of interest, the selected candidates would be advised to join appropriate centers in Goa / Mumbai / Kochi / Visakhapatnam

APPLICATIONS & ELIGIBILITY: CSIR-NIO invites applications from students in India and abroad for undertaking doctoral research leading to the award of PhD degree. Aspiring applicant must be < 28 years in age (relaxation as per government rules), have an MSc (in any subject) / BE / B.Tech / MA in marine archaeology from recognized universities in India and carry fellowship of CSIR/ UGC/ DBT/ GATE/ ICMR / JEST / INSPIRE.

The students from abroad must have an equivalent degree, a valid visa and financial support. The meritorious overseas students may receive partial financial assistance / fellowship if recommended by the selection committee
