Dr Umakanta Subudhi is working as a Scientist in CSIR-IMMT since 7th August, 2009. He obtained his M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology from Utkal University in the year 2002 and continued there for his Ph.D. under the guidance of Prof. G.B.N. Chainy. Dr Subudhi is the pioneer in curcumin research with respect to thyroid disorders. His work on antioxidant role of vitamin E and curcumin in general and curcumin in particular to the hypo-and hyperthyroid rat model is of great importance. Oral administration of curcumin combats oxidative stress and positively regulates antioxidant gene expression in altered thyroid states. Nonetheless, for the first time in the Utkal University two molecular techniques like RT-PCR and Western Blot to study gene expression have been introduced by Dr Subudhi and since 2006 these techniques are used routinely in the Department of Biotechnology. Apart from the major doctoral thesis he contributed to the field of chemico-biological interactions and metal ion interaction with nucleic acid.
