Position Summary Information

Job Summary

This is a Postdoctoral Researcher position in a newly-developing Biomedical Institute for Regenerative Research (BIRR) within the College of Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University-Commerce. The position will be funded initially for 1 year with an option to renew for a second year (or more) depending upon satisfactory progress in the duties and the continuing availability of funding. The research will be focused on inducing stem cells or non-muscle differentiated cells to differentiate into cardiac muscle cells in culture and for use in the repair of myocardial infarction in rodent models to set the stage for translational medical applications in future human clinical trials. The culture and maintenance of stem cell lines will be required as will surgery to induce infarctions in the animal models followed by injection of stem cells to treat and regenerate the damaged areas of the hearts. Morphological and physiological analyses will be done on the treated mice and rats to evaluate the effect of heart repair by the stem cell treatment. A major role in helping to write grants and manuscripts for publication and biosafety and IACUC protocols will be an important component of the job. In addition, direct supervision and collaborations with undergraduate and graduate students working in the laboratory will be strongly encouraged.

Required Education and Experience

PhD or equivalent degree in a life science or biomedical science discipline.

Preferred Education and Experience

Specialization in cellular/molecular biology, mammalian cell bioengineering, stem cell biology.

Bioinformatics knowledge for sequence analysis, recombinant lentivirus construction.

Prior doctoral/postdoctoral research experiences in molecular biology/biomedical laboratory research especially in stem cell biology and mammalian cell bioengineering.

Required Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Standard microbiology/molecular biology laboratory equipment utilized.

Novel imaging equipment (e.g. laser confocal microscopy) and both real-time and standard PCR needed for many experiments.

Preferred Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Experience in working with FACS and small animal surgery.

Detailed Job Duties

Duties Performed

This position requires expertise in cellular, molecular/developmental biology, tissue culture, tissue engineering using mammalian cells, microscopy and small animal surgery. The job will involve the culture and maintenance of stem cell lines in order to direct their differentiation into myocardial cells which will be used in experiments to repair myocardial infarctions induced in mouse and rat models of the heart disease. Analysis of the repair process from the stem cells injected into the mouse and rat models will then be analyzed using various imaging techniques including histology and fluorescent laser confocal microscopy and cell and molecular biology methods as well as analyses of physiological parameters of infarct recovery. The job will also require participation in writing grant applications and manuscripts, presenting work at national/international conferences and in writing and updating compliance protocols for biosafety and animal care.

The major experimental research activities will include but are not limited to:
1) Construction of recombinant plasmids/lentivirus.
2) Production and maintenance of lentiviruses
3) Homologous recombination and/or lentiviral mediated engineering of non-muscle cells.
4) Routine cell culture (stem cells, fibroblasts, & differentiated cells) and screening of cell types based on immuno-chemical as well as Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS).
5) Small animal (mice & rats) handling, surgery and making myocardial infarction models in these rodents.
6) Assisting and working with BIRR faculty in writing research grants and manuscripts for publication.
7) Generation, collection, and analysis of research data and preparation of manuscripts for publication in high quality peer reviewed journals.
