About BIG Scheme

The Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG) is a funding scheme under Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), a not-for-profit public enterprise set up by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The BIG scheme is currently available to scientist entrepreneurs from research institutes, academia and start ups. As part of this scheme, successful BIG Innovators receive up to INR 50 lakh (appox. $100K) for research projects with commercialization potential with duration of up to 18 months. The BIG Scheme is currently managed through 6 BIG Partners across the country including Venture Center, who works with the Ignition grantees (BIG Innovators) to provide mentoring, monitoring, networking and other business development related activities.

The purpose of the BIG Scheme is to:

  • Foster generation of ideas with commercialization potential
  • Upscale and validate of proof of concept
  • Encourage researchers to take technology closer to market through a start up
  • Stimulate enterprise formation
The BIG Scheme currently supports proposals based on following themes:
  • Medical & Health Biotechnology
  • Biopharma and Medical Devices
  • Biomaterials & Diagnostics
  • Agrobiotechnology and Animal/Marine Biotechnolog
  • Industrial/ Environmental Biotechnology
  • Biomass value addition via biotechnology
  • Biotechnology based services/reagents/supplies
  • Bioinformatics and bio-IT interface etc
The call for proposal is announced twice a year, i.e. on 1st January and 1st July. Call for proposals typically remain open for about 45 days.

Role of  Venture Center
Venture center is one the 6 BIG implementation partner across India.

Venture Center located in NCL Innovation Park, Pune is a technology business incubator specializing in technology start-ups offering products and services exploiting scientific expertise in the areas of materials, chemicals and biological sciences & engineering. The BioIncubator at Venture Center further aims to nucleate and nurture technology and knowledge-based enterprises leveraging knowledge in the areas of biotechnology (biopharma, agrobiotech, industrial biotech and clean technology), biomedical engineering/ devices/ diagnostics, biomass value addition/ renewable fuels/chemicals/materials, bioinformatics, bio/medical services and related disciplines.

In the past the BioIncubator and BIG teams at Venture Center have mentored and supported entrepreneurs wanting to start-up an enterprise focusing on broad domains of Life Sciences including Biotechnology. Several of the mentored entrepreneurs have successfully raised funding through BIRAC-BIG scheme and other such schemes offered by Dept. of Biotechnology and Dept. of Science and Technology.
